Probably not the best place to put this but...

The fabric on the driver side door (its only a strip, mostly leather), came off yesterday.  The conclusion I drew was that the heat (94* outside) melted the glue holding the stuff on.

So I took it to a friend of my parents, the only one to ever work on the car and a mechanic for many decades.  He told me to take a paint brush, and paint Elmers glue on the part of the door where it goes on, then put the fabric on and tape it up to hold it on.  He said if it didn't work, bring it to him and he would do it. (he was too busy to do it at the time)

So, any of you ever heard of doing this?  I might try it, but for some reason holding something on in my car with Elmers glue just doesn't sound right to me...

Did he specify a type of elmers glue because they make more than one type of glue. I suggest that you use contact to cement, what you do is spray it on both sides wait a little bit and it will get a little tacky once it hits this point stick it on and smooth it out quickly. Then you should be pretty much good to go.

hmmm...sounds a little sketchy if I were you I would go with the contact cement it is a much stronger glue. Plus with the multi purpose you will have problems with it drying out as where you wouldn't have these problems with the contact cement.

Contact cement is what's used for most automotive upholstry adhesive needs.

People underestimate the adhesive powers of Elmers.

94* is hot for a car that was just resurrected from sitting in a garage for 5 years.  I was pretty much given the car, a '95 Saturn.  It was in perfect condition except for the engine and the upholstery problem (and it was a little dirty).  I had someone drop a new engine in it, and I just fixed the upholstery with some spray on adhesive (thanks kickinwing).  Very nice car, awesome acceleration, and excellent gas milage (I've gotten almost 40 mpg out of it).

I plan to do a great deal of work on this car.  My first order of business is a new damn horn.

Np glad you got it fixed and sounds like a decent car for it being free and all.
