I got board and i've decided to make some wood foregrips for my ak, i got to do some more sanding on it, anyone know a good stain color to make them? Update Sept 17 Well i dident make it to the hardware store but i found an old can of stain dated 1992 on it, Kinda old and it look ok, so ive tested it out and well yea /\ picture above. Note: the foregrips arent really that light of a color and the stock isent that dark lol...dang flash. Update Sept 18 Well i had to modify the pistole grip, it was made for a right handed person's and it bugged me alot, so i filed down the finger grooves down. Im thinking of making the back of the pistol grip stright (see how its round at the back). I have no choice to be left handed when it comes to rifles, Im going to put on some wood grips, maybe that might look better?. If not i'll replace the whoe thing wood (i hope i dont). Very nice. If at all possible, a mag well would rock.
For stain, just bring a pic and find something close to the standard color. |

Real Kalashnikovs don't really have magwells. At least, nothing that protrudes like the magwells on the M16 and MP5 series of guns. |

Hmm... My only suggestions for you are: 1. Sand all of the dings and scratches out of the rear stock (I can see black crap) 2. Then use high grit sandpaper (Like 220) and sand the crap out of everything. It will make everything nice and smooth when you stain/seal it. Otherwise it will look like crap. Good job with all of this. I have made and sold a couple pairs of home made wooden grips online, and I would never have the patience to make something like that. Congrats. |

looks very cool. as for stain id say go with either oak or walnut stain. something dark would look awesome. possibly even a cherry color. what kind of wood did you use there? |

I used some pine wood, pine 2/4 for the front and a 2/6 for the stock, now my room smells like a pine tree. |

OK for a clolor I would go with those verathane stains. Get 2 a Honey brown and then a really dark stain. You can mix the two to get the perfect color. Just grab a chunk and make one mixture test it and let it dry. If its too light add more dark. Remember that when u put a clear coat of verathane(you'll see which one at the hardware store it has a picture of a diamond on it) That will maek it a nice gloss finish still. Put about 3 coats of clear coat on. Make sure to use a 3220 grit sand paper between each clear coat to rough up slighty. The first couple of coats will not dry completely smooth, dont be discouraged. furhter coating will make a glass like finish. Just dont sand the final coat. Enjoy and Man it look good keep it up.
