Topic: 98 or X7?Posted: 31 March 2008 at 12:16am |

I've been paintballing for a few years now and have only been through 2 markers, the Spyder Shutter and Smart Parts Impulse. I'm looking to move on to a Tippman, but want to know how much better one gun is from another... I'm much more of an outdoor player, but do spend rainy weekends on indoor feilds. Currently my impulse is having more and more problems each week, and I'm looking to move on to a more reliable gun. At a first glance I'd say the X7 is a much better gun, but thats why I'm in this forum is to find out what really would be best for me. My playstyle is to rush, so I'll be using a remote line and a stock, with a front vertical handle if compatible. Any way I can keep good control over my gun and keep it light aswell, because comming from my overweight impulse i deffinitely want a change. If I were to upgrade a 98 I would basically make it identical to this (with a few minor changes) but nothing too drastic. http://www.tippmann.com/forum/wwf77a/forum_posts.asp?TID=174 469&PN=1 Doing this would be cheaper than the 700$ setup I'd want from a X7, so is an X7 REALLY worth that much of a price difference? Or is the 98 built well enough to compete with it once a few upgrades are put into it? http://www.tippmann.com/product_guide/x7.aspx I just customized the X& but not sure if it saves or not.. Also.... if anyone can explain to me the major differences in the different types of 98's tippman is selling on the website? they seem like the same to me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!! |

Well it kind of depends here. in the middle of the 2 is the A5. Has the cyclone and you can egrip it for less than the base model X7. The 98 is very customizable and all of them have more upgrades than you can imagine. it usually comes down to feel. go to a pro shop and hold them all. then try the one that feels the best to you.

If you are looking to spend over $400 on the marker including upgrades I would not move in the direction of a Tippmann. Since you already have an Impulse I am assuming you have access to HPA. I would look into used high-end markers such as Egos, Angels, timmys and whatnot. There is no reason to downgrade from any electro to a Tippmann.

Well i'm getting very sick of my guns jamming and breaking each week so i'm really only looking for a more reliable gun that can compare to my impulse (while its working)

If you want easy maintenance and reliability, Timmies and Egos are a good way to go. The only thing you have to do is take the bolt out the back, take the ram out the back and lube it up. Its simple.
Also, I recently shot a few Legends, those are very impressive, and I'd test them out if I were you. |

I have never had a problem with my Ego. Its very simple to take apart and clean, and it shoots like a dream. All you need is a good barrel out of the box. I havent even thought about upgrading anything other than the barrel on my ego.

Those are all good options if I get the cash, I'm trying to keep it on a low budget though so I dont know what to do.. Do any of the suggested guns have upgrades that would include a stock and remote system? I know getting the stock is the hard part on these types of guns but I'd really like to have it. Or if anyones ever heard of a way to just put a stock onto an Impulse? I might get this gone to work yet but It's just so heavy |

What do you already have? If you already have a loader and HPA tank you can just pick up a makrer in the sub $400 range used. Check out PBN, they normally have good deals in the B/S/T section. Also if you part out your Imp you might make a little money on it that you can put towards your new marker. As for stocks, they are pointless, because you use your HPA tank as a sotck just as you would do on your Imp. Also a stock on an Ego would look like absolute grabage. |

If you read the above posts you'd see that I'm going to be using a remote system so I need a gun with a stock

you dont need a stock for the remote line. you can hook hook it into the ASA with the ASA adaptor and QD.

You really don't need to run a remote on a high-end marker anyways. These higher end markers are not like your Impulse. They are not tall or heavy. My ego wighs about 2 pounds without a tank or hopper. with a 68ci tank and a loaded hopper it wieghs maybe 5 lbs. Also you can run a remote if for some reason you need to without a stock. But once you move up in the higher end marker world you will realize that remotes do nothing but hinder movement. |

The higher end marker world where instead of paying off my car I buy a paintball gun i'll use once a week during the summer only? no thanks.
that's why i'm in a tippmann forum buddy, because theyre affordable and from what i've seen, dependable.

I am gong off the fact that for the price of new X7 or A5 you could have a used high-end marker that preforms better than any Tippmann marker that has not had at least $500 worth of upgrades put on it. Given that you already have an Impulse you should already have access to a Electronic loader and HPA there is no reason to downgrade when you can have a better marker at the same price. Hell, for around $300 you could pick up a new ICD Promaster which will also outpreform any Tippmann. Trust us, we are here to help you. I personally have 10+ years of paintball experience. We are nto trying to make you spend more money, we are trying to help you get the most out of your money. Listen to the people here and you will be much happier with your purchase decisions. |

this is true. Snake and Co. do know their facts. If you are bent on getting a Tippmann though I wont stop you. I do love mine. That said I also have NO personal experience with any of the guns they have recomended so i cant put them down. these guys are very techy when it comes to the marker dept.

go with the tippmann. They barely evr have problems. When it comes down to it you just wanna play with a gun you know isn't gonna fall apart. I used to play with an electro but after a few games the thing needed all kind of fixes etc. If you have a decent barrel and maybe an e-trigger you're set to go. andd HPA

What type of marker is it that you were playing with? A kingman? No electropneumatic marker I have ever used requires to constant adjustments in order to play. It sounds like the marker you had was either extremely low end or it was just operator error. High-end markers are meant to require very little maintenance and upkeep because they are designed for tournament players that normally have less than 5 minutes in between games. Therefore reliability and consistency are key. Your higher end markers normally only have one of two moving parts to prevent the wear and tear that come with these parts. Also these types of markers are extremely easy to clean because they must be field-stripped very quickly in-between games. Lots of engineering gets put into these markers for a reason. go with the a5 dude pretty much exactly the same as the x7 on the inside and has more mods, way cheaper, and lighter im told. you can also put some of the x7 mods on it.

Well, unlike some I wont try to change your opinion. You asked about the X7 vs the 98 Platinum.
The X7 has the cyclone, tons of rails to stick things on. However, after only adding a front grip on the bottom rail, and an e-dot sight on the top, the thing was bleedin HEAVY with a tank and paint load. If youre running remote, you can get rid of some of that weight. Its also very big overall, just a large package to be carrying around. The 98 Plat is solid as a rock. Far and above the previous 98 line in terms of ease of use. No cyclone stock, but it has the anti-chop system in there from the get-go. |
