so its been almost a year since i've gotten my car revoked by my parents for getting a speeding ticket (still have court; kept getting pushed back).

so now my aunts got a 96 jeep cherokee sitting in her driveway that might run, but needs some work after she'd gotten into a fender bender; it wouldn't affect the car running.

the problems i see are this:

flat tires(but they're brand new)------easily fixed. inflate, problem solved

seals-i'm sure since it's been sitting so long the seals in the engine and elsewhere have dried out from lack of use over time. i'm sure the seals themselves are relatively cheap, but i would assume the labor would be pretty high....anyone know if replacing them myself would be easy/difficult/worth it?

-

insurance-. enough said.
but in all seriousness, i keep seeing tv adds for cheap insurance however, i am: 19, male, and a speeding ticket that i pleaded not guilty to. any ideas on what that could cost? i know we've had how much do you pay threads...i don't think i'd get any help from my parents on that, and my dad also made it clear that i would be paying for the car and insurance, which i have no problem with but i have to get the cash this summer (hopefully)

-inspection-what do they normally go for? or what do you pay to get an inspection done

-registration-i live in ny, but i think i can look that up on the DMV website, unless someone knows offhand

so...any suggestions on any of the above or anything else that i'm missing? any other problems i overlooked on the car that hasn't been run in at least a year?

another quick side note when mentioning help/tips...the extent of car maintenance experience that i have is super minimal...changing oil, oil filters is about the most i've done, besides adding fluid, changing tires.

any help/tips/advice is appreciated, even job ideas that will make me some money quick (serious stuff though; although i haven't ruled out chip n dales. i wish i was joking)

Replacing head gaskets in my '93 Ford currently. It sucks but beats the HELL out of paying someone to do it.

how difficult is changing the gasket heads? like i said, i'm really sort of a novice with car repairs, but i have pretty decent technical skills (i.e. i can figure out where the round peg goes)

The inspection is around $30 and registration in NC is $150.  The only problem is that jeeps use so much gas.

Meh, it depends how you drive.  I can average 18mpg in my 6 cyl. wrangler. I cruise in a higher gear than I should be because why the hell do I need power just going from point a to point b? When I'm doing like 40 around town, I roll in 6th gear with like 1100 rpm's...barely using any gas-if there's a big hill, I'll throw it in neutral and coast down it- stuff like that really helps. Now, if I'm driving like an animal, then it goes way down, but if you can resist the temptation to race to the next stop light and shift through all the gears red-lined as quick as you can, even a jeep isn't terrible on gas.

Oh man, those v8's in the grand cherokees love there gas, if you do go through with it which I would, because chances that the seals are messed up etc. may be low just don't floor it. I had to learn that the hard way in my truck, I get like 28 if I drive it correctly but if I floor it than I get like 9. Like dye playa said as long as you don't floor it you will be just fine.

Head gaskets. Really you're main issue will be tools. As long as you have the tools and good instructions you should be alright.

Seals such as main seals and such are more for mechanically inclined people with some kind of experience.

The car is only 12 years old. Just change all the fluids, the spark plugs, plug wires, charge the battery and it fire right up. If it was just a fender bender and the air bags didn't go off, the ECM won't throw any codes at you.
As an 18 year old that has received a speeding ticket (23 over, 4 points), going to court wasn't that bad. I was offered a plea deal in court, 439$ fine but no points for the ticket. I don't think NY has the same policy as NJ (its called the unsafe driving plea) but if you take it to court, you will be offered a plea deal.

1-car hasn't been run in so long, the seals in the engine most likely need replacing. all the other stuff are things i consider minimal.

2-i was going a lot faster than 23 over; i was offered no plea deal, as  the jurisdiction i was in wouldn't allow for it, and in the words of ricky bobby, "i wanted to go fast"

1.Try turning over the darn thing, don't go thinking you need any seals until you try to fire it.

2.LOL
