So since I broke my ankle again and I have a manual explorer, me and my dad went to the auctions yesterday.
We came home with a 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS for $1000. Its in good shape too, pearl white paint looks great.
But, on the way home with it, it wasnt so great.
The car told us to stop because the engine was overheating. So we did and my dad called THE car guy that everyone goes to(my dad is also very good, but hes pretty much Ford only). Once we mentioned it had the Northstar engine, he instantly said head gasket.
But, theres no white smoke, nothing in the oil, no loss of power AND when we opened the hood each time we stopped, it really wasnt that hot.
One funky thing was that when we idled it the one time, the RPMs were fluctuating quite a bit. Probably 500 up and down constantly. We also found a plug that was unplugged...if that makes sense. Its to the left top corner of the engine and its just sitting there. We arent sure what it goes to either.
Any help or suggestions?
**Edit** We replaced the thermostat today. I looked online and people say the engine operates at 210 degrees, and my dad (without knowing this) said that it went up to about 215 and stayed. The thermostat usually keeps it at 180?

Know anybody with a scanner? Maybe it's throwing some other codes that would be helpful.

I would flush the cooling system, make sure the fan works and there are no obstructions in the way of the radiator.
If it wasn't that hot when you opened the hood, maybe the gauge went bad. |

Well, I guess as we were pulling away from my dad's friend's house there was a puff of white smoke from the left exhaust. My dad decided, even though I'm buying, that it's not what it's for. Only a temporary car.
So, in a matter of 20 hours after buying it, we have a for sale sign up, $1500 we are asking but we will take whatever. The good ones I've seen online cost about $3-4k so, hopefully we won't lose anything. |

yea, used caddys sell for very little money...used car dealers wont tuch them...
find that plug that was unpluged and trace it to where it goes... dont take a check on it cash only. and make sure you note "as is" on the bill of sale... gms 3800 or jeeps 4.0 straight 6 are the way to go used (under 150k) edit: miss understood the plug thing, take a pic Edited by merc - 15 August 2009 at 6:48pm |

I absolutely LOVE my 96' Jeep Cherokee. Built like a tank and runs like a horse. Over 232,000 miles and still running like a champ. In fact, I was in an accident about 2 months ago (long story short: crazy woman [likely under the influence] slammed on brakes in the middle of the intersection, I rear-ended her) and I totaled this woman's car while my Jeep smashed a headlight, dented the bumper, and slightly bowed-out the driver-side fender.
