Muay Thai is a fad in the sense that everyone thinks they're going to just pick it right up and become a UFC fighter.

If it really is purely for self-defense, I don't think you can beat Krav-Maga.  If it's more for fitness, why not find a boxing or kick-boxing instructor?

Judo is fun. I think. I STILL can't find a dojo that teaches it...

I'll second Krav Maga for the self defense aspect, if you're purely looking to do that.

As far as excercise...I hear a gym and daily jogging or bike riding works wonders :P.

Judo's great, I did it as a kid.

Judo is fantastic, for messing around with. I wouldn't take it for serious self defence, and there isn't much cardio in it.

Personally JDK, Jeet Kune Do and boxing thrown in. You can work up a pretty good Cardio with a bag.

Very limited experience with Krav Maga. It looks solid, but then there are always people trying to show/teach you moves on how to grab a gun or knife from someone's hand.

Muay Thai is good, in the same lines as pretty much anything you train at to use properly will help you.

It isn't a magic type of combat that'll beat anything ever before it. GO try a couple of different classes to find one that "fits".

Try Brazilian Jui Jitsu, look for anyone instructing in MCMAP for starters.  Boxing is a good work out too.
