Bought a used A5 Locally, it was filthy!!  Tore it down, cleaned it up replaced hammer O Ring, re-assembled.  Took it out to test fire over chrono in back yard, first shot was 385fps..   WOOOOOOOW!  Turned the velocity screw all the way in and was only able to get the gun to shoot 300fps..  no lower.  Tried both C02 and HPA with no better results.

Any suggestions?

Clip half a round off the mainspring and rechrono. Repeat until you've got enough leeway on both sides to suit you.

At least, thats what I would do with most guns, someone may chime in with a tippmann specific fix.

Suggestions:
  • After-market spring kit--weaker main spring
  • Trim the main spring
  • Add a rear velocity adjuster
  • Add a regulator

What would cause the main spring to stiffen?  I mean I cannot imagine this guy (previous owner) shooting people at almost 400fps on a regular basis..  The thing was absolutely filthy by my standards when I bought it home.  All I did was clean it and changed the hammer O Ring and lube it up real good.  Main was kind of rusty, maybe thats a contributor?

It could be that it stiffened up as it rusted. It could also be that he really was shooting 350 plus at people. I've kicked people off the field for it before. Lots of outlaw players don't understand the concept of a fps limit, and scoff (or quietly ignore you) when its explained to them.

EDIT - you could also leave the marker cocked, or compress the mainspring in a vice for a while and weaken it that way.

I was thinking that perhaps the inside of the A5 was so crudded* up that the previous owner might have put a heavier spring in just to maintain regulation velocity and the new owner's clean up is allowing the spring to perform to its full potential.

*Yes, it's a word; a "Mcword" to be exact--so get over it.

LOL Mack, great idea, and that quite possibly may be what has happened!!

OR the valve spring has weakened....
