Domesticated Foxes are the wave of the future!

Seriously, I want one. And no, they aren't wild animals, they're the product of a selective breeding and domestication experiment that has been going on in Siberia for the past 60 years (that's approximately 200 in fox years). The program was the cover story of this month's National Geographic, and after looking into it, it turns out that this Sibfox company is the US importer of these true domestic foxes. They're expensive, but so are pure-bred dogs.

Anyway, more info on the domestication:

Wacko

Are foxes expensive?

Just like some dog breeds, foxes are fairly expensive and are offered at $5,950.

Transportation from Russia and extensive paperwork is a significant part of the cost.

AKC Certified Purebred Golden Retrievers go for about $2500 or more these days. It's not that far out.

Show quality Great Danes range anywhere from $800-$3000+

It's really not that much of a stretch. Add in the fact that over time, the costs will come down....

Or befriends a hound at a young age.

Trust me, that won't work out without a few tears here and there.

My aunt has huge scars on her face from getting attacked by their family pet... A wolf.

We see foxes quite often in my backyard. They are fun to watch.

They tremble at my name...

Yeah, I've thought for a while that an otter would make a badass pet, since they're pretty unconventional and adorable as all hell. The downside is they're high-maintenance and bitey

Could you imagine the reaction to some one taking a sit down on your toilet and the otter jumps out of the tub? Win.

I've actually always wanted a pet skunk. You can litter train them like cats, and have the scent gland removed- apparently they make awesome pets. My great uncle had one named "Stomper" that he has stuffed now. I always thought that was a cool idea.

A few years back I started researching the legality of it in NY, and there are no licenses issued no way, no how. So I'm bummed about that- but when I finally get out of the Reich that is NY, you bey your bottom I'll be looking again.

Interestingly enough, the same genetics program that resulted in the domestic foxes also used otters. They found, however, that otters don't like to do it as much and thus, were hard to breed.
