It's been snowing since 1PM here. It's now 11PM and it's not supposed to stop until more than 24 hours from now. I've shoveled the driveway twice to get a head start on the awfulness I'm sure I'll face when I wake up tomorrow morning. I've decided I just need to go ahead and finance a Caterpillar D10 for snow removal up here given the past several winters. I figure I can get the whole neighborhood to help foot the $3000 or so monthly payments on it for the next 10 years so long as I promise to clear the whole neighborhood when it snows.
I'm tired, it's late, and I'm stuck in this house for the next 36 hours with my wife, kid, and sister (who was in town to have dinner with Justice Scalia and her flight home got canceled). I might not make it..... |

Instead of buying the D10, just find someone that has one and supply them with ample amounts of booze (afterwards). That's how we got some of the trails on our deer lease finished.

Scalia is the devil!
We're supposed to get up to a foot. My game plan is to hide indoors until it is finished. My senile parents insist on getting their vehicles inspected and shoveling 27 times. So I'm likely getting dragged into this mess. |

Meanwhile in Texas, it's 56 degrees. We had a cold front.

No snowblower?
It was in the 30s here today so I got to wear my light jacket. It's a welcomed change from the super insulated duck hunting jacket I had to wear when it was single digits the last week. The last snow we got was around 10 inches of super heavy wet snow. I came inside, took a handful of ibuprofen and immediately went to bed after clearing out everything. Good luck out there...

Got mainly dug out by 3pm yesterday (Saturday). It continued to snow lightly after that, so when I woke up this morning, I had about 3 more inches to shovel. Total for my particular micro-climate: 37". We have some drifts up to about 6' here and there, but for the most part, you can't even break trail in this stuff as it's up to your stomach before you stop sinking enough to move forward. Getting the ladder out of the shed in the back yard was an expedition in and of itself. Why do I need the ladder you might ask? 3+ feet of snow on the roof. And thanks to a FOOT of insulation in the attic, it's not going anywhere unless I get at least some of it down to shingles so that it'll warm up and melt in the sun. Otherwise, I'll likely lose the roof at some point when the ice dams start forming.
Finally got out and about today around 3pm. The contractor that lives down the street has a plow-equipped pick-up. Did he take that to work the night it was supposed to snow? No. Took the Highlander instead. Was he able to get down our road when he got off work? Nope! So after most of us had shoveled and cleared our driveways, he comes running up the street in his pick-up and plows us all in. At least he got one lane open, but only from HIS house to the main road so he could bring the Highlander back down. Did I mention he's an ass? Yeah, when he moved in (before we did) he set up a cock-fighting ring in his back yard. Two of his neighbors are cops. They politely informed him to knock it off before they had to arrest him. Anything further down our road from his house is SOL, especially since he just pushed all the now from his driveway and the rest of the road into the middle of the street in that direction where it will turn into a wall of solid ice over the next few days until a county plow truck hits it. I've already informed the local authorities that he removed his snow into the street (illegal here) and warned them about the impending ice wall of death they'll have to deal with. We actually had one lane just about open all the way from two houses down from mine all the way to the main street with just blowers and shovels. He did us a small favor clearing some of the rest of it out of the way, but overall he's a dick. Went to the store, it was the only thing open. Even the 24 hour McDonald's up the road from me was closed with 3' of snow in the parking lot. Still, the store was enough to let me regain some sanity. Will drive my sister to the airport tomorrow afternoon so she can finally catch a flight back to NC. No work for me tomorrow or Tuesday and will likely be off Wednesday as well. I'll have to go in to throw any refrigerated proteins in the freezer before they go bad, but otherwise, it'll be a snap. |

There's nothing like a good blizzard for getting out of unwanted obligations. We could use one up here.
Enjoy the time off, glad everything's mostly okay. Edited by Benjichang - 24 January 2016 at 10:17pm |

I welcome all the snow we can get.
It's been a pretty good ski reason out in Utah.

Looks like we'll be getting another 6" or so Monday night into Tuesday. The snow from the blizzard still hasn't all melted yet despite near 50*F temps this weekend AND a ton of rain. I'm pretty sure I'll have some glaciers in miniature next to my driveway into the spring.

Little bit of snow and ice here this morning, which means we'll probably be more shut down than anyone else in the country.

I never thought I'd miss the snow....
Then again I never thought I'd see a whole city shut down for a few flurries that didn't stick. People here think I'm crazy when I tell them I used to drive to work in 18+ inches without much hesitation. |

While it's nice to not have snow everywhere, it's a bit too early for the snow to be gone here in Denver with highs in the 60s or 70s.

We had a high yesterday of 64 here in the DC area. It was a nice change, but it's going back to regular seasonal temps (40s) starting tomorrow. Weather channel said that we're to expect cooler than average temps in March, but that it's going to be hotter than average April and May. Not really much to make me happy there. I much prefer the cold to the heat. We'll wind up having a scorcher of a summer here in the mid-atlantic I'm afraid.

Today was a beautiful 80 degrees, not a cloud in sight, and a nice gentle breeze. Shorts, t-shirt, sunglasses, and sandals were worn.

Too hot. 72 and sunny for the high with a low of around 50 overnight is just about perfect for me. Hence my love of the Eastern Appalachian highlands. |
