i just picked up a new 120 gig hd at best buy for 20$ (gift cards and rebates) its a seagate ultra ata 100

im installing it on a dell dimension 4100 with a p3 its running around 850 mhz i think but i cant remember where to find it 256mb ram

it is installed and it says its running fine but i cant get the icon to show up in "my computer" i pulled the little thingy off to make it a slave to my 18 gig hd

im leaving the os on the 18 gig and just stickin my stuff on the 120 so when i get a new comp this winter i can stick my 120 in that...

it dosent reconize the extra space i dont think nore dose it show the icon...i need to know how to stick the icon in "my computer" thanx

Have you created a partition on the drive or formatted it?

If you cant get it partitioned try to download (unless you are against piracy) a program called Partition Magic. Its nice.

There's a utility called FDisk built into DOS/Windows that you can use to create and delete partitions on new drives. But it's dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

This is why I don't recommend newbies try to build their own PC's...

Anyway, what you really need to do is get someone who knows what they're doing to help you on site.

i figuered i wouldent have to do anything to it. the plug should be set as master or to let the comp pick and i pulled the bracket off the 120 so it would be set to slave...

the stock 18 gig is so deep in there i dident wanna pull it out...

Partitioning is a way of organizing drives. For example, when I installed Linux I had to divide my hard drive into several partitions. Some were for the Windows filesystem and the rest were for the Linux filesystem.

It's possible that partitionmagic will allow you to format the drive in a usable way, as well as allowing it to show up as a usable drive.

May or may not work. Try it anyway.

Oh yeah... You know what? You prolly also have to switch the jumpers on the master. It's probably set to "Cable Select", which doesn't work very well on most IDE buses.

Is better if you force it to Master.

But you still need someone who knows what they're doing to FDisk and format the new drive.

I bet even he could figure out Partition Magic. Its really simple. Just tell it what you want it to do and it will do it.

You might try the Partition Magic thing... I've always done it by hand. But you're playing with fire here. Screwing up would be bad, bad ju-ju.

I have a general rule... Never try to walk someone through something they should never be doing themselves.

Yeah, well, "retarded" has little to do with it. What you need is experience to know what you're doing.

I'm not big on theoretical intelligence, only practical application.
