That is a Tippmann SMG-60. They were the first select fire paintball markers. Pretty ahead of their time considering they came out in the late 80's (88 I think?), when most guns were pumps using 12g's. This sucker had f/a and constant air. The stripper clips were also a cool feature. However, it got turned into the SMG-68 in around 1990-1991 when the .68cal ball was becoming the norm. This version was semi only but some owners swapped the sear/trigger group from their 60's in it to make it full auto. In about 1992, when hoppers were the "in thing", the SMG-68 got transformed into the 68 Special. Users could send their guns in and have them converted to hopper accepting 68 Specials that broke in the middle to access the internals. Sadly, many conversions were done and not a lot of SMG's survive today. They go for a pretty penny. If I was somewhat well off, I'd definitely pick one up, have it restored, and use the thing. Yes, I would love to play a game or two with one lol!

I thought I read in a book that they were the first paintball gun to become illegal. I can't remember why.

i agree, only way it really looks like a shotgun is the clip shells themselves, but either way, itd be cool if tippmann reproduced those for an aniversary thing...limited basis of course, thats how most companies run |

Actually, I saw a company doing them recently. I think they were for blowguns, but that's what I'd use if I had an SMG-60. The thing definitely wouldn't sit on the wall. |

In the U.K. and other countries that have/had laws against any kind of full-auto projectile launchers, yes, they were illegal, and therefore the first to be illegal. In the U.S. They were never illegal but, a lot of paintball field insurers balked at the thought of full-auto related injuries and refused to cover fields that allowed them to be used. You can probably thank the NPPL, and other tourney orgs for really blurring the line between full and semi auto to the point that insurers don't really care. |
