So I just took over a new job in the detachment. I now work in the Information Systems Management Office (ISMO). Basically an IT Help Desk with all kinds of sweet stuff to play around with. I went through and cleaned out the office (more like a hole in the wall) when I went down there and found all kinds of crazy things, tape drives, ZIP Disks, BNC networking cables...

I'll post some pics of my hole in the wall later.

Welcome to my world. When I picked up my job as the tech in a school, I rooted around the office and found everything from zip drives to bags and bags of memory chips, an ancient cell phone, and one very old laptop that we gave to some guy who collects ancient computer equipment. It was fun.

What pisses me off is that I cannot get rid of any of this ancient equipment without writing a up a dermo letter, and jumping through hoops. It annoys the hell out of me.

So write up the letter, with an itemized inventory. Yeah it's a pain in the ass, but it is your job... And a dirt simple task so you can claim you're legitimately busy with stuff. It's just the sort of proactive work superiors notice.

How much of that stuff is actually tagged and cataloged though? I'd bet you could get rid of half of it without having to deal with DRMO forms. Although, I'm only basing that on what's actually kept track of on my post.

Do they actually have a prop tag on an individual BNC cable or zip disk? If not, toss.
I understand that getting rid of some of the smaller things will still leave a lot of larger worthless pieces... but it's a start.

And if you can manage to rummage through the entire office (not just your spot)... you could probably make a major project out of clearing out the unnecessary stuff for a major DRMO haul-out.
If your superiors are cool... could take cred for it and see if they'll put you up for anything.

We've had Corpsmen at our command get NAMs and COMs for the dinkiest projects.

I already got rid of the small stuff,  however there are like 6 old P2 computers a server box, some storage units, tape drives,  and so on that are on our records.

I was actually thinking about trying to get the P3 server box, and the storage units to play around with if they will let me.

As for NAMs and COMs that wouldn't happen because everything I do goes through the Ssgt above me so basically he get credit for all the work. Plus our det is only commanded by a Col so I don't think he can approve something like that.

ouch snake. but at least he got to do his job in the Marine Corps while he was in! BURN

sounds cool though. to bad the ssgt is a jerk and takes all the credit. more reason for you to sign stuff so they will see your signature not his. and i think a col. can approve a nam.
