I have seen this in countless sitcoms and cartoons, where ppl need to take there shoes off and its "weird" or being Japanese thanks for the help and clearing this up. |

Depends really. At least here, it varies from house to house. Obviously, if you have walked through dirt or mud, or water, it's courtesy. But, if you don't know the person, and there isn't anything to indicate you SHOULD take your shoes off, it would be weird to do so.

So do most Americans, so you are probably just as well informed as the rest of us. |

Depends on the situation. It's usually considered rude to walk into someone's house wearing shoes though.

I'd imagine it would depend on the region you live in.
Here its very disrespectful to wear shoes inside, but thats mostly because the culture here is influenced a lot by Japanese custom. |

I think it just depends from family to family. Everyone in my family takes their shoes off in the house. However, I have friends who wear their shoes all the time in their homes. I usually ask if entering someone's house for the first time.

Ya I think it depends on the family, but I think that at least around me most peple take off their shoes in the porch. Some people have seperate shoes for indoor and out door too so they just switch shoes.

It depends on how dirty your shoes are, how recently the floor's been cleaned, and if the owner does. If someone invites me in their house and leaves their shoes on, I usually just assume it's cool unless they say something.

When coming into someones house for the first time, I always just see what the owner of the house does, and follow suit.

I take my shoes off when I come home from work as they're caked in crud from the kitchen floor at my restaurant. My everyday shoes That I wear out, I'll wear in the house.

Yeah. Shoes go fast when you work in a restaurant. I even got some of the shoes meant for working in a kitchen, and the grease/grime ate them up in about 5 months.
I can't believe I worked there for 3 years... I hate that place so much. |

I always ask. Certain houses I do take them off. my friend in the Marines. most of his house has wooden floor. soo i take them off. especially if they are wet or something.
other houses like mine where it tile, or we just dont care, we keep them on. but i always take my shoes off regardless. i cant stand wearing shoes all the time. EDIT: Fixed spelling mistake. stand was stant. Edited by Kristofer - 16 January 2008 at 5:53am |

i ask a lot of times if im unsure. if my boots are dirty i pop um off (love the zippers down the side) but most of the time im in need of clean laundry and my socks dont always match...so given the option i keep them on. my boots pick up a lot of grease at work so i try and take them off when i get home but sometimes forget and dont take them off untill i sit down at the computer.

I normally watch what the owner of the house does, and follow his/her lead. At my place I take off my shoes once I get in my, room, but I wear them whenever I leave my room and go into the kitchen, or down the hall.
