I randomly came across this on youtube and thought it sounded quite cool:
Hang drum Another So I looked up some more videos and such, and read up on them. Now this is the shame part: Such a nice sounding instrument is almost literally impossible to buy. The company that makes them consists of two people, that hand make each one. There aren't any dealers, suppliers, anything of this instrument. You almost never see them online, and when you do they're well in the thousands. So what if you want to buy one? You have to fly to Switzerland and make an appointment, and bring $400 (or more) and try to order one, if you're extremely lucky. On top of that, theres also apparently a giant waiting list, so even if you do manage to place an order, you have to wait 3 years or so for it to be made. The closest alternative is Making your own out of a propane tank Again, for something that is so simple and has such a nice sound, that's such a shame. Edited by choopie911 - 19 May 2008 at 5:52am |

If someone made one, I'm sure others out there can too.
BTW: That's freaking awesome. |

You certainly can make them, but sadly they sound just terrible compared to the original. There are videos of the propane tank ones and they're not even close to the calibre of a real one. |

The real ones have a better and smoother sound than the propane tanks.

I think a dredlock ponytail and pro-MJ t-shirt are required to play this instrument.
*one of the above may be substituted with a hackysack |

So this may be a WICKED stupid question.
Is there background music in those videos, or is that all the instrument? I ask because it doesn'tseem too awesome if there is music in the background. |

My crappy laptop speakers definitely must not be doing it justice, I will have to rewatch it when I get upstairs to my tower.

This actually reminded me of another cool and rare instrument:
The Glass Armonica Yes, I meant to write Armonica, that is the original and correct name. People started to think it caused insanity and/or death, so it pretty much died until someone revived it in the 80's. |

The ideal base for creating one of these would probably be the top of a 55 gallon steel oil drum. Jamaican steel drums were originally created from oil drums left behind from sailors and pilots.

Probably not if you look at the shape of it. As shown, even a propane tank is closer. |
