I had a depressing conversation with some girls at work, all my age (mid 20's.) Rather than analyze it, I'll just throw it out there: Girl 1: I may get to meet Pauly D I'm so excited
Girl 2: OMG He's so amazing!
Me: Why the hell would you be excited to meet Pauly D?
Girl 1: Um, he's an amazingly talented DJ.
Me: I dunno, if I was going to pick a celebrity to meet it'd be David Gilmour, Bob Dylan, maybe even John Mayer or Josh Homme.
Girl 2: I have no idea who any of those people are except for John Mayer and he's gay.
Girl 1: I've heard of Bob Dylan.
Me: Pink Floyd? Queens of the Stone Age:?
Girl 2: Those are bands right?
Me: Guitarists and lead singers of bands, but yes. Girl 1: That's stupid. Why would you want to meet the musician it's the DJ that does all the work. That's like wanting to meet the guy who built your car.

And then the whole theater stood up and clapped. e: But yes, her use of gay as a pejorative is pretty bad. Edited by BARREL BREAK - 11 November 2012 at 5:43pm |

My favorite:
Me (to a new bagger when I worked as a cashier): So what kinda music you listen to? Her: *lists some pop stuff* What about you? Me: *lists some classic rock stuff, including AC/DC* Her: "AC/DC?" Isn't that a clothing line? |

I wore a Fender shirt to a bar one time and a girl asked me if Fender was a band. That's always been an ongoing joke with my friends that were there-"Wait, isn't Fender that band?"

How so? This thread is the equivalent of those youtube comments in the form of "You say Justin Bieber, I say Nickelback. You say the gap, I say hot topic!" |

Lol barrel break. I took it more as they know Pauly d as a talented musician over actual talented musicians.
Doesn't he just play music anyway? He doesbt actually make music. |

That's actually an interesting distinction that frustrates a lot of people, such as strato. Dance music has a history of being relatively anonymous with regard to authorship; it is a communal activity, facilitated by the DJ. The producers of the music are relatively unimportant, what matters is the experience of the dance, which is much more directly related to the DJ, hence the importance. The value mismatch between someone who is experientally driven rather than authorship-concerned is the gulf between strato and his coworker. DeTrevni's experience is just a mismatch in era, he's concerned with older pop, she with newer. |

As much as I appreciate the effort you're putting into what you're saying, I think you're overreading why I found this conversation so funny. Let's rewind and just ignore the entirety of the conversation up to one point-
Had she said something like "I don't value music based on acknowldgement of authorship I enjoy the communal aspect of it" this wouldn't have been postworthy, though it would have made for better conversation. Obviously we could dig into this as an abstract idea all day, and I'm totally down for that, but none of that relates to why I found her comment so funny-she basically played into an internet meme that I always thought only applied to 12 year olds.
I think they'd find their manager posting their pictures on the internet kind of creepy-ish They're both fairly cute but they're in serious relationships and honestly we have basically nothing in common past being work friends. |

Meh . . . it's just not that funny. Now what would be funny would be if someone played into to some meme about totally misconstruing the intent/meaning of an internet forum post to the point where their negative rebuttal comments didn't even really apply. THAT would be funny. It's a shame it just doesn't happen. |

I happen to want to punch about 99% of "house DJ's" in the face. They are by and large crap and the garbage they add is generally just that. While there are some good ones all the others should just stop.
Just stop. KBK |

I was under the impression that,as far as technical skills go, Pauly isn't all that great? I don't hold any malcontent towards him, and actually enjoyed him on the show, but I thought I remember a big stink earlier this year between he and other DJs.
