The batteries will only drain if you leave switch in the "on" position.

The electrical current is always running regardless of on/off position. It doesn't matter that much because you should always carry extra batteries.

Yes, it does drain, but not a lot.

if you plan to not turn it on for atleast 3 months, sure. even at that, you won loose any charge, but they may leak after more than 6 months of no use at all.

it will slowly will drain the batterys, but very slowly, if its cold in storage the batterys will drain fast. but warm them up; put them in ur pocket for a hour and they will recharge faster, because battery acid freezes if its cold, but they dont train it and burn it out, if u warm them up after they will work agian, its like when u hit a remote and then it wrks agian, its cause the lil cardboard roll inside the battery, the acid gets in between it and when u shake it, it gets knocked out and works agian. But you should just keep the batterys out, and then put them back in when ur ready to use it agian. because the metal is still touching metal, they will drain slowly.

Batteries like AA's, D's, C's, and 9 volts use a chemical reaction to function.  If there is no circuit there is no "drain", but they do age and deteriorate.  Storing in a cold place makes them last longer because it slows the deterioration, but they should be brought up to ambient temp before use.  Using cold batteries reduces their life greatly.

It is best to remove batteries form any electronic device when storing it as they will often leak and corrode the device they were meant to run.  If you are using the item on a regualr basis, there is no reason to remove them.

When possible, use the new rechargeable NiCadMi rechargeable hibrids!  They last a long time, charge quickly, and will save a mint over time.
