I know I saw this, I want a lightsaber too. I mean... not that I am a nerd or anything (because I'm not), but something like that would be totally awesome. Just make sure not to sell to anyone under 24 years of age. (24 for the reason that college kids would hurt themselves with it, goto CollegeHumor, you'll see what I mean) But I believe they will only be released once they are permanently tuned so that you cannot cut threw solid steel (such as bank safes), but rather be just as good as a normal sword that never breaks and always stays sharp. Also, for death row they should introduce death by lightsaber. Because the blade's energy would nuetralize your nerves and cauterize your vessels, making it the most painless death. Notice how Luke Skywalker didn't act as he just got his hand chopped off. I mean, ya he freaked out, but he wasn't in serious pain. If you took a lightsaber and commited seppuku, then it would be painless and fast. Even moreso than lethal injection. then they could make dull softbladed lightsabers for kids to play with. It's 2:00am here and thats about the time I usually ramble on about random stuff on forums. |

Yeah, me too. lol....
One thing I didn't get, what stops the beam from being infinately long? Do they turn it up and down like a flame on a lighter or sumthin? |

Shown here, each lightsaber has a blade length adjust. Basically how it works is like a highly consentrated cordless welding torch. With a welding torch 2 gases burn simultaneously, and depending on the ratio of the 2 gases determines the size of the arc and the heat generated. Basically, the bigger the arc, the lower the heat, the smaller the arc, the higher the heat. With a lightsaber its much more advanced and it uses some other sort of electronic type energy instead of fire. And with electricity it is a lot more capable to make precise measurements. That way you can adjust power and length seperately. I am going to take a wild guess and say there are 2 beams that make up the blade. 1 is the actual sharp part outer edges, and the other is the middle part that restricts the size. The outer edges are probably a positive energy and the middle part is probably a negative energy. The length adjuster probably adjusts the intensity of the negative energy. The more powerful it is, the more it restricts the positive beam. The less powerful it is, the less it restricts it. The power adjuster probably adjusts the intensity of the positive beam. So according to my theories, it's a complete curcuit, therefore it's impossible for it to go out into infinite. Without one or the other it wouldn't run. The polarities in my theory can most possibly be reversed, I don't know which way is most efficient. |

I'm still not sure you can do it. Its going to be hard to find any sort of energy that is controllable in that fasion. Maybe if it had handles at both ends, but not just a truncated beam.
And WGPguy, who cares if we're talking seriously about fictional hardware? At least we've got imagination, and raw brain power enough to do it. Edited by Dazed |

Lightsabers at this moment are impossible to make.
LS's are lazers, and lazers don't just stop at a certain point, they continue indefinitly. |

I was going to say "all of the Jedi had te same length light sabers", but then I remembered that back in the 'action figure collecting days', some came with longer light sabers...
