    Posted: 14 November 2005 at 9:45pm

I'm in something of a bind. I need to come up with 10 lesson plans for teaching a unit on WWII.

anyone have any ideas? I've got a couple of image analysis plans, a timeline, an internet reserach project and a 'letter home' activity.

I need at least 3 more.....did any of your teachers out there do anything interesting when you learned about WWII?

Anything at all that Reb could steal?

Its not VITAL, I could come up with a few more on my own, but I figured I'd draw on you guys for a while.

Hmm, what about a looking to the future activity or somehting? Give examples of key events that could have gone either way, and ask how it would affect us and the world now. Or you could go more radical. I always found relating to students works the best to teach.... I find Brothers in Arms gives a good WWII environment depiction. Maybe show them some of the gameplay and explain all the different elements.

German Nazis = very bad

Italian Nazis = pretty bad

French = cowards

British = stiff upper lip

Jews = dead

Japanese = not understanding "master race" concept

Polish = taking "cavalry" too seriously

Russians = cold

Americans = leaving their wives back home with the milkman

I think I'm gearing this toward 8th grade. It's alot easier to come up with plans for them as opposed to 11th grade where you have to do more analysis stuff.

Band of Brothers is a great example. You can get the environmental aspect across but not the brotherhood thing.

I was going to use scenes from it to demonstrate combat environment. I thought about the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan, but I dont know if I'd get clearance to do that with 8th graders.

Do the episode at charantan where they get Sgt. Spears as their leader. That scene where he runs through the town is just too damn cool.

I took WWII history last year and my professor was just so retarded that I can't even help you.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Effects on life at home

Showing the attitude of the people at home, since these 8th graders are probably just seeing negative reactions to the war in Iraq now, etc

WW2 Living conditions (Make them go outside and dig a foxhole)

Photos of the Aftermath

Give kids a chance to find a WW2 vet and interview them if they're willing. Extra props if they're were a German or something.

Did Dave just make several useful and entirely non-sarcastic comments?

Yes....and don't bring it to his attention, I need his brain. If you bring it up, he might just lose focus.

**edit** too late

I tried, but didn't get a spot on the roster, to interview WWII vets for my history class last year. I was really looking forward to it too. The interview of a vet will drive home the human element more than anything else, and we won't have that resource for much longer.

In middle school we had a Jewish survivor of the holocaust come and speak to us. Seeing his number tatoo was sobering, and hearing his personal account was facinating. See if you can find a group of survivors in your area to come and speak to the class.

You might set up a lesson where you give the students the situation surrounding the dropping of the atomic bomb and let them decide whether or not they would make the same choice.

I might be able to come up with more, but I have to step away for a minute.

The Saving Privaye Ryan idea is very good one. Id say let them do a interview with a vet. Maybe each kid writes  the vets story(there experinces,etc) down and type it up.  Put them all together and make a book and print it out and give it to each of the kids so they have a whole mini book of war stories. Each story about 2 pages. Maybe print the book out and the kids give them back to the vets they intervewed. Every one benifits.

Only Hugh can prevent florist friars.
