storing an air tank

i just bought a brand new 68ci/4500psi pure energy air tank. i filled it up and put it in my basement, about an hour later i hear it spewing air.

why is this??? i mean i can just buy a new burst disk. but am i not supposed to store air tanks when they are full???

Did you have it sitting by a heat source such as the boiler or furnace? If the tank was filled to the correct pressure then the safety blow out disk should not have ruptured...unless it was defective. Are you sure it was the disk? I have had problems with the HPA tank valve leaking badly when new. A few drops of oil in the fill nipple solved the problem. If the safety disk blew, I'd send/take it back to were you bought it. Many safety disks have stamped right on them what their blow out pressure is. It should be about 1.5 to 2 times the working pressure of the tank. First fill to the correct pressure should not have blown the disk.

All tanks should be stored with some air pressure in them. As cus98tom said, about 500 psi minimum. Storing a full tank in a cool dry place is perfectly safe.

It is better to store most cylinders with some pressure to prevent undesirable things from geting inside(moisture, fumes from heaters...). Also, a little pressure helps to keep valve seats seated and corrosion from forming on surfaces that make those seals.

You said it was brand new. Did you buy it from an individual (doubtful then if it is actually brand new) or an Ebay store?

Be aware that when you buy from an individual on Ebay usually there is little recourse if that individual will not stand behind the item. You are not powerless but it takes some effort with letters to Ebay and PayPal (if you paid that way). 

All Ebay stores from whom I have bought and most individuals have stood behind the item and either replaced it or refunded my money.

If it is as simple as the rupture safety disk, then take it to a local Paintball Pro shop...but you knew that didn't you? A bad valve could be a bit more of a problem as some Paintball stores in my area will no longer work on cylinders (not even to install an anti-siphon tube).

You can always send it to the manufacturer. Most of them have web pages, (Crossfire is one with whom I have done business. I am sure Pure Energy does also) that give phone numbers and shipping info.

Do people jerk you around all the time? Do people just pull your chain to see what happens? 100% oxygen in a SCUBA tank would be lethal to the diver below about 20 feet. No SCUBA shop will fill a tank with "PURE" oxygen. You have gotten some good advise along with some crappy advise here. You apparently choose not to take the tank to a GOOD Paintball Pro shop. (if a Pro shop told you the SCUBA shop filled it with oxygen, then find another)

One last point then I'll leave you to the mercy of your buds. When you completely empty a tank on a warm day (or a day when the barometric pressure is low) then stick it in the basement where its is cool, the bottle cools and what used to be atmospheric pressure inside the bottle contracts, (or when the barometric pressure gets higher) outside air can enter the bottle...through the pin valve...taking with it what ever moisture and fumes may be present in the environment around it.

If you want to keep the tank as clean as possible when the gauge reads zero, screw a bottle cap on it. Then no air exchange can take place. Leave the cap on until the next fill. Also leave the cap on while transporting the bottle so the tip doesn't get damaged while knocking around in your equipment bag.
