Hey folks, I got my new motherboard from newegg the other day and me and my friend are supposed to switch it out with my current one sometime this week. Well, I just now got all my docs on to this comp from my laptop and I was wondering if I need to think about moving them again (ie: will I have to reformat in the process of installing the mobo?)

Also any other tips you can give would be greatly appreciated, this is a tad bit over my head....

OK, some of what I will point out will sound dumb, but as an engineer I've seen people blow allot of components up.

1. make sure your un-plugged not just "off" ( you be surprised , many don't do this)

2. get an anti static ground strap, commonly called a wrist strap. this grounds you to release any static or more correctly ensures your at the same potential as the mother board.More Electronics get fried by static discharge than any other way when upgrading , you won't feel it or see it , the board just won't work.

3. Read what ever info comes with the board and follow the manufacturers recommendations.

4. take your time , don't man-handle it.

5. use the anti-static wrist band when handleing any of the components ie; memmory, sound card, etc.

Reformatting wise you don't HAVE TO, you can install the new mb drivers over the old one... I highly recommend reformatting though to start out with a new slate of drivers.

I had difficulties with changing the motherboard once, and I had to make a fresh install. On the other hand my girlfriend did this once and Windows XP worked fine. In the end, some times it works, some times it doesn't.

I'd recommend doing a fresh install in any case.

The anti static strap thing is a myth. You do not need one.

Also, you don't need to reformat, just install the drivers that come with your motherboard.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Also, RAM actually is hot-swappable, just make sure you do it fast.

Best case, you'll swap the mobo, boot up, and install the new drivers.

Worst case, you swap the mobo, get a bsod, put the Win XP disk in the cd drive, reboot and do a repair, then install the new drivers.

Overall, I would back up everything and reformat, but it isn't necessary.

Especially if you are running Win 2k/XP, you shouldn't NEED to format the hard disc for proper operation. But format/clean install of the OS will provide the best results.

Alrighty. I'll go ahead and back up, then reformat if needed. And on the anti-static thing, I always thought that if you just kept a finger or something on the case, you were grounded...

Yes , but your only working with one hand then. Someone replied that the static thing is a myth. I can assure you it is not a myth, every company that deals with micro-electronics uses them. At my company we take a two hour course every year on this subject , Memory is one of the most susceptible to the problem. Just go to radio shack and spend the few bucks for it.

One note on the RAM - Random Access Memory , as soon as you turn power off the RAM looses anything stored in it , RAM is the scratch pad for the computer . So anyway you don't need to exchange it fast take your time and do it right.

SAFETY NOTE: NEVER wear the static wrist band with power on, it is only for the exchange of electronics with the power OFF.
