Hey all, I was wondering, does anyone know much about using a PC as a DVR? I've been researching a bit and I'd really like to try and do this but I've never really delved into this realm before. I know I need a tv tuner card and plenty of hard drive space, but is that it? Also, does anyone know what to look for in a tv tuner card? Can ya suggest any good ones? All help appreciated! Thanks.

And you'll need software too. I'm not sure if most TV tuners come with good stuff or not. BeyondTV was given a great rating in Maximum PC but it's not cheap.

Yeah I think it does, if that's the operating system you've got.
Edit: This is the one MaxPC put in one of their systems... just somewhere to start. Edited by Jack Carver - 01 October 2006 at 10:25pm |

Yeah, this isn't extremely technical, I was more just lookin for some casual tips. That BeyondTV thing looks pretty cool though, it's not all THAT expensive either, 150 for software+card+remote+shipping...

ati has a couple different tuner cards... the only things to really look for are capture rates and how big of a file 1 hour will be... you dont want to have so huge files even tho im sure you can compress them... media center does do it... but you still need the card... and some of the cards you can just use with media center without any other drivers to install

I've used Beyond TV, SageTV and Media Center Edition all with my Hauppage PVR250 card. I have to say, Sage is my favorite... for the price and the performance...
