As of yesterday i had my 98 custom's act spring just plow right through the end cap and shoot out of the rear. I called tippmann and they are sending me a new one , along with a plastic act pin (???) or somthing. They said that they had to many of this same problem so they were turnging to plastic. My question is why not make metal end caps? this is the only other plastic peice on the marker besides the fore grip, and it sure takes a lot of internal abuse. Does any one else have this same problem and think metal end caps are a good idea? |

I cannot recall the specifics, but metal end caps were originally conceived and were ultimately trashed in favor of the plastic. I believe they were prone to failure as well... but do not recall exactly what.
Either the end caps were cracking, or the receiver halves were. Either way, the plastic ones held up to repeated cycling better. Edited by ShortyBP - 28 December 2006 at 1:51pm |

Well, the metal would just hold up to the energy of the kick. The plastic theoretically absorbs it. I'd think the plastic caps were better. I've never personally had one shoot out the back before...

How about they make a hybrid one, with plastic casing around a metal plate in the back. Although it would cost alot more....

Normally, the end caps don't fail as long as the buffer O-ring is in place and in good condition. The problem with metal end caps (or rva's) is that they transfer the stress to the body. I have seen the results of failing to put the buffer O-ring back during reassembly under both sets of circumstances:
