a PB barrel is about 68 cal. If you take two haves of a paintball and fill them with 6 mm air soft bbs you could use that as a shotgun. the two haves would split apart once its out of the barrel, spreading the bbs. problem is how do you keep the balls from splitting in the hooper.

NASA and the Americans spent millions of dollars and hundreds of hours to develop a pen that would write in space.....The Russians used a pencil.

You can get maybe 5 airsoft pellets in a paintball. 6mm paintballs never break either...

The best idea I've come across so far was to make a re-usable "shell" that was packed with 3-4 smaller caliber paintballs (.40 cal or so). The shotgun would have to be a break-breech kind so that the latex coated shell could be put in place and then closed in to seal the air source and the barrel using the shell as part of the system. The front of the shell was a cut-and-folded stiff latex cover that opened up (like a flower blooming) when the air traveled through the back of the shell and pushed the balls out. The trick is to make the barrel wide enough to allow a varied path for the paintballs without making it so wide that you'd have breaks or whatnot. The only drawback is that the ammount of air needed to force rounds out of the marker with sufficient speed without having a closed system like you find with paintball makers that have a barrel bore that is similar to the diameter of the single projectile they are firing.

why would it not work with a closed breech? considering its automatic reload and not a single shot marker, you would still need a bolt or leaver to push the ball/shot into the barrel.

The shell-type design that I came up with uses a re-usable shell casing, plus, you don't want it flying down the barrel rather than the rounds. Yes, you could use a stepped barrel to seat the shell in the chamber and breach, but due to the size, and the fact that the front of the shell is latex/polymer it would easily drag or stick using a pump-action or semi-auto action to chamber the next round. Not to mention we were working on a prototype at the time and needed ease-of-manufacture to be an important part of the operation.

I think that posters just like to try to defy physics. Lets add shotguns to the list of bad paintball ideas
