I just bought a replacement valve body for a 98 custom.  When I got it, I mic'ed it to see what it measured.  It had a definite taper from the O-ring end to the other.

Is that correct, or did I get a reject valve?  What is the purpose of the taper? Does the inside of the power tube taper?

The taper is there for one of two reasons that I can think of. Either the mold in which the power-tube is formed is just made that way, or the tapering allows for easier insertion of the valve into the power-tube and keeps the o-rings from being damaged by forcing the valve into an exact fitting power-tube. My guess is it's the latter. The wider opening allows for the hammer and hammer o-ring to pass into the power-tube body and strike the poppet valve without causing undue wear on the o-ring, and it keeps the valve seal o-ring on the back of the valve from shredding upon insertion as well.

Ask any DMLCD/DM3 owner about o-rings and non-forgiving bodies. The tight tolerances on a Matrix marker means shredded o-rings whenever you put the spool and bolt assembly back in, or take it out.
