I own an 7 year old original Model 98, and a 5 year old 98 Custom.  I just recently got back into the sport after 3 years because of a nasty dirt biking accident.

I was wondering if at any time the front bolt diameter was ever changed in any of the 98 re-designs?

I just recently bought a trinity 14" barrel, and tried it on my old Model 98.  The bolt is too big and does not slide inside the barrel.  In fact, it gets stuck so bad, it doesn't even fire.  Same effect with my 98 Custom.  Both guns have the stock front bolt.

I wondered if there was ever a size change in the front bolt, or did I get a jacked barrel?

(moved from other post... which was deleted)

Try it on your Custom first.

The design of the front bolt hasn't changed. It should be the same.

It could either be that the barrel doesn't have enough clearance for it (can be proven or ruled out based on what happens with your Custom)...
or (this is a better possibility)... the front bolt on your older 98 has swelled a little due to long-term contact with oil.

Also try this with your older 98 bolt: remove the o-ring on the front. See if it gets stuck still. Could be that just the o-ring has swelled a little. Easily replaced with a new tank o-ring (same size).

Well, do not buy a Trinity 14" Recon barrel with Suppressor for a 98.

He's the next question, I have seen a Lapco "Old Model 98 barrel to New 98 marker.  What's up with that?  They apparently changed something along the way...

This warpig history of the 98 article talks about a barrel spec change in 2003.  I think I remember something about a change in power tubes at the same time.  I am pretty sure I bought a replacement tippmann powertube for my old model 98, but I don't remember for sure.

Powertube change shouldn't be an issue with anything. Early model 98s have metal powertubes, they switched over to plastic at some point. I have both, no complaints either way, and I've never felt any need to replace them with an aftermarket.

Barrel threads did change. Since you have an older model, it will accept all barrels (old or new). Newer 98s will not accept older-threaded barrels, hence the need for an adapter.

Sorry to hear that the barrel was the culprit. Was hoping it was something simple and cheap, like an o-ring.

Well, here is the conclusion:

I talked to Trinity, the manufacturer (or at least the guys buying the rights to use there name).  When I called, they asked me to call them back while they tested their in-stock barrels for the same problem.  They called back in about 10 mins saying that every 98C version of this barrel they tried does the same thing.  They are re-calling the barrel as it was defectively produced.  They offered me a refund in store credit form.

I then called TippmannPros, whom I bought the barrel from.  They also tested a few of the barrels they had in stock.  They also had the same issue.  They also offered me a full refund in store credit form.

Since the 16" Tippmann Werks barrel I bought at the same time works so well, I am not going to get a second barrel.  I'm thinking some kind of in-line, High-Pressure regulator.

Palmer Stab would make a good reg choice should you finalize that decision.

Glad to hear you initiated a product recall that will ensure other players won't be SOL! Nice work.
