Seeing as how there are like 10 different versions of the 98, does anyone know the order of "quality" they fall in? For example the plain ol' 98 , then the 98 custom...etc.

All the same quality, different features.

Thanks, what I was trying to ask was what are there different features I guess, or is there an order of from least bells and whistles to most?

my first gun was the tippmann 98 ...  it was good.. the name tippman is like craftsman to tools.. i chucked it in muddy and beet it to hell until i did something dumb and gotten locked up with it at 18.... but than i got back into paint ball and i bought the tippmann 98 act pro... i put a smart parts 16 inch barrel with the freak kit for more accuracy..  it has a cool drop forward,extended trigger, e grip that has like 10 different fire mode's like single fire.... single fire into fully auto.... 3 shot burst... i took it to skirmish last year and people with there fancy guns couldn't keep up with my tippman... they were shocked all i got was compliments....  and the anti chop technology is so simple... but it kicks @$$  i have no had a ball break in barrel yet...  just in the hopper from running and stop ed it before it went into chamber.. i had also purchased the tippmann A5 with the 22inch barrel and red dot scope... the first time i fired it it was like a night mare  all i did was break paint shot after shot...  i changed the barrel 10 times... but its breaking inside the cyclone i took everything apart and put it back together and the same thing so after spending 400 on it i gave it to my Little cousin knowing he cant hurt him self with it cause it don't work... i really don't have time to seek out problems... i just give them away

Basic marker -> Coolest stuff

1. Model 98
2. 98 Custom -> pro/act
3. 98 Platinum
4. Alpha Black (only stock milsim 98)

For my money, it's the Platinum ACT, Smart Parts 14"-16" Progressive Barrel, HPA tank.  Don't need or want anything else from the 98 series.

I have a model 98, it's probably about 9 years old, maybe older. The only thing that I have done is a 14" barrel upgrade and a line.

This gun sat unused for about 6 years and then went a year of constant use prior to my ever cleaning it. I finally cleaned it, though the inside wasn't very dirty, and found I need a new detent.

This gun is a bull. The guys I go with have ION's that are jacked up, great for speed ball, but they can't touch me in woods or scenario play.

The barrell gave me some much needed accuracy and distance.

I have considered buying the 98C, so I could put together a scenario gun the looks like an M-16, but I was wondering if the old 98 could be modified with the aftermarket parts as well. It seems that the trigger area is the biggest difference, am I correct?

Interesting. I know of lots of people that use Ions and other speedball markers for woods and scenario and do quite well. Depends more on the player than the marker. Take the Tippmann World Challenge for example where the Tippmann team got owned for the second year in a row by a bunch of speedball markers.

Unless you have a Flatline or Apex, the barrel you added did nothing for distance. Accuracy yes, distance no.

If you want the dependability of a 98 with milsim looks built in, I would suggest looking into an Alpha Black. You can basically get a gun out of the box that looks like an M4/M16 for a whole lot less than it would take to build one using a 98C base. As far as modifying the old 98, yes, most add ons that fit the 98C will fit the M98, excepting double triggers, e-grips and RTs. The cyclone is not a drop in for the M98 either as you would have to drill a hole for the air valve that runs it.

Oh, and your reply was a little off topic.
