    Posted: 25 September 2008 at 9:19pm

Well, after 2 weeks of my dad telling me the noise was probably just shocks needing some oil, I decided to try it.  Turns out, not the shocks.  The leaf springs (I think thats what they are called) on the rear of the truck arent connected anymore.  The rear driver's side connection completely rusted away and it is just staying their pretty much because of some tension and the weight of the vehicle.  (The front connection is still there, but not the rear, and the other side is starting to get holes in it from rust).  I know, you can reconnect them, but its getting to the point where the rust is starting to spread too much, and its getting old (1997).

So, Im trying to think of my options vehicle wise, and Id figure id ask everyone here.  First off, Id buy it from an auction, so prices are relatively cheap there, so I have more options.  Preferably domestic (dont start arguing, its a family thing, I dont agree either), but if its a good deal, I may pick it up.  4WD is also wanted.  All for around $4000.  Auction cars are really cheap around here, so it is possible.

Theres an 02 Subaru WRX there tomorrow and my dad is going to go while im in school.  He really likes them, and so do I.  So, im hoping he for some reason feels like buying a car, picks it up for cheap, and I pay him back, but I doubt it.

Any opinions?

Slow, but it gets great gas mileage during rush hour ('cause you can step on other cars and all).

*EDIT* Not sure about the whole used thing though...

If by "cheap" you mean within or slightly over your budget, no way in hell are you getting a wrx.

I think a car loses like 45% of its value after you purchase it new.

So I would buy one from a repossessed car auction, or go to carmax.

EDIT: Thats IF you want low milage and quality like a like-new car.

That may be overstating it just a tad...

But the point is valid - under most circumstances, buying new is rather wasteful.

The one time I went to an auction, it was a waste of time I thought.  I had a hard time understanding the auctioneer, who was inside a garage so there was a bit of an echo thing going on.  Well it got even worse when another auctioneer started doing another set of vehicles in the same garage.  It was impossible to understand them so I left.

Our auctions are pretty good. They have a wide assortment.

Last time I went last year, they had a relatively new Mercedes, probably
3-4 years old, sell for $7k. It looked great too. Low miles and you could
drive it to test it.
So the Subaru could be a dream, but it's possible.

And yes, for some reason my dad and uncle will only allow domestic
cars, but my dad always had a thing for Subaru for some reason.

Oh, and there is going to be a 1971 Lotus Europa there tomorrow. My
mom made my dad promise not to buy it.

Something is wrong with that...

You can get some quality M-B's in that price range, but they won't be low miles or 3-4 years old.  Even a base C.

Exige/Esprit?  Sure you don't mean Exige/Elise?  The Esprit is a different animal altogether...

And the old Europas are a car that only a serious car buff could love...  They have not aged well.

You sure it was a WRX, not an Imprezza? I've seen pretty of Imprezzas' that were badged at WRXs but weren't.

Either that, or you have a kick ass mivi van.

It had a hood scoop, which I don't think you get with a regular Impreza, and it had the spoiler and all the body styling.  If it wasn't a WRX, the guy was trying hard to make it look like one.

But even so, a regular WRX isn't that superfast off the line.  The advertised speeds (just under 6, I believe) assume you are launching and are super-awesome-shifter-guy, and neither of those are true for most stop-light "races".  For most people, I would be surprised if they can get from 0-60 in much under 7 with a regular WRX.
