the one and only time i wish 357 wasn't banned...

anyone remember the name of those books that are specific t omake/model car and have indepth sections on cars areas and how to fix problems and what not?

i use factory manuals... its about 50$ per book or 100$ per set, but its worth it.

1 book for engine/suspension, 1 book for body and electrical, 1 for transmission...

chiltons and haynes are ok but they are about 1-1.5" of information where the factory books are 5-6" thick...

In all honesty a chilton or Hayns is a good guid to general maintence but for more in depth repairs you really need the manufacters service manules.

nothing is "hard", some things are just more of a PIA...

EVERYTHING mechanical is torque and mating surfaces. clean the surfaces real well then whipe with your hand to make sure no nicks or grit.

theres this/a kit that looks like this thats always on sale at sears... normally about 170, buy it if you dont have any tools, then add a few things like swivels and extensions. if you have tools disregard this.

you probably have a straight six under a long hood. most/all of the engine should be accessible. this is CAKE! any major work (head gaskets) start on friday as soon as you can. this gives you 2.5 days to break parts, skin knuckles, and make countless trips to the auto parts store before you need to be back at school/work.

buy like 4 cans of break/parts cleaner and 2 cans of nut buster.

look around for parts, esp with suspension parts. a lot of times you can get off road/performance parts for the same price as stock replacements.

the 4.0 straight sixes were rocks, 250k+ miles.

electrical is foreign to me. most of the crap is run under the carpet (if you want it as a play truck junk it) you can buy new harnesses or buy spools of wire (make sure its the same size) then just tun it along the stock routs, make sure you have several different color wires, and either splice them all in around the same place or find some connectors.

wether you run 1 wire or 10 wires ONLY cut 1 at a time! if you cut a bunch of wires at the same time its a head ache...

when i tear down an engine i cut a card board box and lay it out on the floor, then when i strip the engine i lay all the parts out just like the came off. 1 row for the main assembly and 1 row for "other" assemblies.

main assembly includes intake manafold(s), heads, valve cover, etc. (lay the bolts in the holes when you remove the main part.)

other assemblies are accessories like alternator, pumps, etc.

take it slow, stay fed, warm/cool, and well hydrated, if you get frustrated take a break and come back to it.

a  thing that like to go on jeeps and is a pain to get to  i should say is the crank shaft position sensor it is a pita to get at and install  ive had to do two of them
