I have a SP Progressive barrel, but i feel like i would like a better barrel. I have considered the following barrels: Freak Jr. Kit, Tippmann Flatline, BT M16 Barrel kit, Hammerhead Battlestixx, J&J Barrel kit Elite, and possibly an Apex. I would like to hear your opinions and why you think each barrel is good. Thanks!!!

If you use the search feature, you will find countless threads on most of the barrels you mentioned. My thoughts; I have owned a SP progressive and found it to be pretty similiar in performance to a J&J ceramic. I don't have any empirical data, but did not notice any significant differences between the two. With that said, most people on here seem to prefer the J&J ceramic and Lapco barrels as good all around upgrades.
The Freak and J&J Elite kits are upgrades from that as they offer different sized backs so you can have a better paint to barrel match. Pretty much the next upgrade over the standard J&J /Lapco upgrade
The hammerheads are rifled barrels designed to give the paint spin and theoretically improve accuracy. There are several threads both for and against these. I have seen reveiws on the latest generation that swears they improve accuracy, but I still have a problem with the round hollow liquid filled sphere thing.
The Flatline and Apex are totally different creatures. Both of these are Backspin barrels that are designed to increase distance. However, they lose accuracy past normal distances and most agree that they are not nearly as accurate at shorter ranges as the standard upgraded barrels. They are well suited for woodball play where you are attempting to shoot "flat" through underbrush or for laying down long range suppression fire. As with anything, there are people that love them, and people that hate them. Also, some people prefer the Apex over the Flatline. I personally have owned a FL for both a 98 and an A5 and liked them for their "flat" effect for woodsball, but agree that they are highly innaccurate for longer ranges. In some cases, the seemed to make the balls do impossible things. Last thing I will say on the Apex is don't believe the hype. You will not be making one shot eliminations by curving the ball around trees and bunkers at extreme angles.
I have no experience with the BT M16 barrel, but anything is better than the stock barrels that come with Tippmanns. Edited by oldpbnoob - 26 February 2009 at 9:46am |

opbn hit the nail on the head. I am a big fan of the J&J kit personally. I have used one for years now and it has always been and awesome performer. I also just bought a Lapco bigshot and it too is wonderfully accurate.

I prefer the J&J and the reason why is that the J&J actually uses backs and not inserts. the backs are perfect for anysituation and inserts always make me a little nervous for some reason. i just dont trust the engineering as much i guess. that is just me though. I have used the J&J kit for a few years now and the only time i had breaks was when the paint was bad (the company admitted that the paint didnt cure long enough) but I actually think that it was breaking in my A5 and not the barrel (I switched to my cocker and didnt have one break again) the other nice part about the J&J is that if you do get a break you can shoot through it. That way you dont have to stop in the middle of a fire fight.
