The Story:

“Operation: Global Assurance
The Beginning

By Spiro Mamaligas

December 31st, 2012. . . the infamous day that shattered mankind’s illusion of superiority as the dominant species on this planet. Scientists told us that the signs were always there, but we refused to acknowledge and understand their meaning—or did we? The Mayan Empire and its advanced calendar, Stone Hedge, the pyramids in Egypt, crop circles—all unexplained phenomenon that pointed to intelligent beings with a far greater understanding of physics and the universe.

They were smarter than us; their tactics and technologically advanced weaponry were superior to ours. They struck us uniformly like the speed of light that emanated from their ships, devastating and destroying major cities around the world in seconds.
This assault ushered in a new year filled with fear and devastation of apocalyptic proportions that invoked nightmares of the like that only the Bible’s Revelations could conjure.

So began mortal man’s quest to defend humanity against aliens from another galaxy. So began man’s discovery of the answer to the long asked question pondered over since his beginning—a question debated by philosophers since the recorded time of man.

“Why are we here?”

The Sartonians’ answer, “You are cattle bred for future sustenance of our race!”

January 6, 2013. . . the earnest efforts for the existence of our race slowly drew to a victorious cessation and proved that man’s adaptability and survival instincts will and can prevail over the only predatorial threat to his species. Man’s analytical mind found a way to defeat the superior predators bent on collecting their harvest planted here over 3,000 years ago. The solution: CARBON MONOXIDE!

With all forms of major communication annihilated within hours of the onset of the alien blitzkrieg, scientists and remnants of government officials from around the world collaborated on this solution via post WWII communications: radios. The consequence of this holocaustic act of genocide, dubbed Operation: Global Assurance, was horrific and came at a price that would forever be chronicled as the largest homicidal act for existence.

In areas that the Sartonians exhibited a strong presence, trees and other oxygen producing flora were eradicated by fire, depleting the regeneration of oxygen through photosynthesis while producing more of the toxic carbon monoxide. With the precision of a finely tuned Swiss watch, cities throughout the world began releasing this carbon monoxide into the Earth’s atmosphere, turning day to night as dark billowing clouds rose to the heavens.

Those who endured the trials and tribulations of the Sartonian’s slaughter now had a new enemy: a polluted, unbreathable, carbon monoxide laden atmosphere. The dwindled, surviving population of the Earth was once again penalized, this time with deaths of many by asphyxiation, at the hands of their leaders. The survivors’ crime? Not having access to breathing devices to filter out the poisonous toxins encompassing the planet.

Surviving establishments hailed Global Assurance, the term itself an enigma, a success story that saved the Earth. Sartonian ships quickly retreated from our planet and left their ground troops to their own demise at the hands of their fare. The termination of the remaining Sartonians was swift in their weakened condition. Man had won the battle but had lost the war.

But the war had truly just begun! With no law enforcement, an almost non-existent military, little food, and scarce fuel, society had come to a screeching halt. Small pockets of survivors littered the continent. These survivors sought solace in reports that a large force of survivors located somewhere in southeast Ohio had begun to rebuild a new society. Experiments were being conducted there to create a way to purify the air by removing the deadly poison that threatened the life of anyone whose breathing apparatus was breached or nonexistent.

The survivors at this Ohioan outpost, known as De Novo, soon became one of America’s last hopes for saving a once-fruitful planet. Radio transmissions were sent out hourly from De Novo in hopes of locating others, perhaps even additional scientific minds, to aide in the crusade.

January 14, 2013. . .somewhere in the barren desert, near the once-thriving city of Phoenix, Arizona, a lone person sat high atop a hill within a makeshift hut to protect himself from the day’s heat. Before him lay the remnants of a recently secured, vintage radio acquired from a now desolate Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. He rotated the radio’s dial as he had done for hours the day before, praying for something, anything, when suddenly a crackle was heard.

John Hansen, quickly fine tuned the radio’s frequency with anticipation.

“This is De Novo Detachment Charlie. We are proceeding to Holloman AFB as planned. Negative contact with survivors in Santa Fe. I repeat, negative contact with survivors in Santa Fe. Continuing to Holloman as planned. Do you copy De Novo Outpost?”

“De Novo Outpost copies. Proceed as planned. De Novo Outpost…out.”

Man in his quest to overanalyze and explain with scientific fact neglected the most obvious. The signs of intelligent beings from space. They warned of their return to gather what is there’s…human cattle!”
