Hello all, I'm looking to buy a paintball gun for my little brother for Christmas.
I own a standard Tippmann 98 (Just a 98, no custom or anything) and I've loved it so far. I've only played a few times, besides that I don't know much about all the Tippmann's or Paintballing. I just spent the last 2 hours reading the site's Spec's and some post here about which gun is better. My main question is this: What gun should I buy for my brother? He's a big 14 year old so weight isn't a problem. My price range is 60-150$. I'd prefer it around 100 +/- 20. I don't want to skimp. (We already have mask, CO2 tanks, and paint balls with paintball holder things). So far it seems I should choose a TM98 custom or an A-5. The x7 and so on seem too pricey. I can buy from a store but I'm thinking of buying from Ebay (I've used it a few times) if there's a good deal and a good seller (Unless anyone recommends this is a bad idea?) One of my main concerns is if we really get into playing more and we'd like to customize his gun, which one is better for customization A-5 or 98 Custom? Or are they close enough unless your ubber hardcore that difference doesn't matter much? For now I won't be customizing, and in a year maybe just minor things, or I may not ever customize which leads me to my next concern.... Performance would be my main concern, which gun performs better on the field. But it seems they are so relatively close it doesn't matter? Please & Thank you for all your help! I'll post a few Ebay links probably in a bit. Edited by Fatentity - 22 December 2009 at 12:39am |

first off I own an x7 and 2 m98's.and honetly the only diference in these 2 guns are looks,(x7 looks better)loading capacity,(x7 has the cyclone)that is basicaly it.so you can put basicaly have the same upgrades on the 98 as the x7.so if you don't really care about looks then the 98 is the way to go.my own humble opinion on upgrades are you should upgrade first are(and in this order).a barrel,a red dot sight,a responce trigger, and either a electronic hopper or this http://www.pbreview.com/products/reviews/5511/ that will make your 98 as good as any x7 or a5 with the same upgrades. but as far as preformance goes all 3 of those guns shoot the same just the a5/x7 can feed fasterthan the 98,but that can be remedied with what I sugested earlier.Edited by cool0 - 21 December 2009 at 9:53pm |

To answer your question, the A5 is slightly better than the 98 but not much. It should be for $40 more though. They have the exact same performance upgrades. 98 - $140 - Without question the most durable and reliable marker ever. Alpha Black - $100 - Same as the 98. You can only make it look like an M4. Azodin Kaos - $90 - Very durable and is a great shooting gun. BT-4 - $110 - Often overlooked but it is very similar to the 98. SmartParts Vibe - $150 - Excellent entry-level marker. A5 - $180 - Basically an upgraded 98. Azodin Blitz - $170 - Same as the Kaos but comes standard with firing modes up to 13 BPS. Personally, I like the Azodin Blitz for performance, the 98 for durability, the Vibe for performance upgradability, the A5 for aesthetic upgradability, and either the Azodin Kaos or the Alpha Black for best value. By the way, if you need an electronic hopper don't even look around, just get this one. It is that good. http://www.ansgear.com/Invert_Too_Paintball_Hopper_Matte_Black_p/inverttooloaderblk.htm

I;m a big fan of the A5. I started with a 98 and moved to an A5 for a while. both are great guns but i liked the field stripping better on the A5 and the cyclone that automatically came with it. Both are durable as hell and both have more upgrades than you can imagine. One other one not yet mentioned though is the SP1. It is a vibe in a more tac style body with lots of rails. I like the looks better but thats just my opinion. It is def a good starting gun and great for the price though.

Maaaan. The SP1 is the only one I forgot. ![]() I didn't post anything lower than $90 or Kingman on purpose. Edited by buhju1 - 22 December 2009 at 4:08am |
