Hello!

Well as the title states I have been looking at the A-5 and well was wanting to know more about it...I am a Noobie when it comes to paintball, I don't know really know anything much about the mechanics of the guns...however I have cramped as much as I could in on the types that are good but more importantly in my price range of $400 (Including pods,HPA/CO2 tanks,Mask,Oil, ect) so I took a look around read some reviews and found the Tippmann A-5. The gun I want is simple I want a gun that's easy to learn mechanically sound not complex reliable and well rounded in range and accuracy... and well what do you guys think about the A-5 from what you have heard or seen.

The Alpha Black/Project Salvo, 98C, A5 and X7, all have very similiar internals and are very reliable. All are good choices. If you are new to the hobby, I would suggest getting the least expensive option with the features you want until you are certain you plan on staying with it.
 
One thing I would suggest you make sure you invest wisely in is a good thermal lense mask. Do not go for the "package" deal that comes with a cheapo mask and 9 oz CO2 bottle. The mask will fog like crazy and you will find the 9 oz tank relatively worthless. Plan on spending at least $60+ on a good mask and get at minimum a 20 oz CO2 tank. If you live in a colder climate and plan on playing in <40 degree weather, look into HPA instead of CO2. Also plan on most likely getting an aftermarket barrel. Stock Tippmann barrels aren't great, and you will find yourself looking for a new one usually pretty quickly. Look into a J &J Ceramic or Lapco Bigshot. Cost is around $40. I mention this, as often times people give themselves a $400 budget and plan on spending $350 of it on the marker and only $50 on the rest. Take your budget amount, get a good mask and gear and see what you have left for the marker. Markers can always be upgraded later.

If you want to spend a little more the Phenom is fantastic.

Investing in a $400 marker as your first marker is silly at best. Keep your investment low until you are certain you plan on sticking with it.

Of course, if he know he really enjoys Paintball, wouldn't it be more wasteful to spend $200 on a marker only to want to upgrade it soon after?

If it's a matter of determining whether or not you'll stick with it - you could get by just using rental gear for a while if you weren't sure.  It would take a LOT of rental fees to equal even a modest gun.  A local place here only charges $5 for basic rental gear.

Depends. Lower end markers tend to have terrible resale. 98C's, A5's and X7's tend to only fetch about 50% for resale. I haven't tracked resale of Phenoms much, but if they follow the trail... If you get back 50% of a $200 marker, you only lose $100. Get 50% return on a $400 marker and you're out $200.
 
I would agree on using rental gear several times before investing in your own equipment.

I don't keep up with Proto Rail prices. I can say that you can get a 72ci/3k tank brand new for about $50.00 and stock used Halos sell for around $35-60 depending on if they are upgraded or not. Looks like there are other Proto Rails selling in the high $100's, so i would say if you got it for the starting price, you would be ok. However, considering it only has 1 day left and no one has even bid on it makes me think it may be overpriced.
 
Edit: I checked PBN and there are several PMR's selling for anywhere from $195 to $225 or so for 08 and older. A couple of 2010 models for $325 or so. Actually, I should say there markers listed at those prices, not sure how fast they are selling as I can't stand to be on PBN for any longer than I have to be.
 
With that said, I might still question spending that much on a first time marker. Electro's are a step up, mechanically speaking, and will require more of a learning curve.
 
In the end, it's your money.

Yeah I see your point I would imagine they are more complex...I'm just thinking because well the A-5 seems to be a good fit but...I'm not set on it due to the fact it needs so much upgrades for it to be more effective. Now Idk much about PMR I just started looking at them.  I don't think learning the mechanics will be the problem I just don't know much about them I heard they are pretty good. Do you know anything about them really? seems they arent the most popular guns
