Cool.
A few weeks ago, I got a job at a local machine shop. I had to give my grocery store the usual 2-weeks, so I couldn't start until last Tuesday. They had me in shipping and receiving, packaging stuff, cleaning stuff, and just general nonsense. Today, my second shift, I ran a manual mill. Coolio. Manager comes up to me and says tomorrow I'm working the CNC. Huh. I don't even have CNC experience, but he said he'll have me trained. So from chip-sweeper to CNC machinist in 3 shifts. Not bad... Also, I can now use a forklift. I'm not sure the world is ready for that... Edited by Magoo - 07 October 2010 at 6:01pm |

He doesn't need training for that.
And exciting. Running CNC machines is fun. Edited by ParielIsBack - 07 October 2010 at 8:32pm |

Okay, lessee. I believe I'll be on a Doosan VMC. I'm not sure which model. Since I have no CNC experience, I'll be working with someone who does, who conveniently happens to be an old buddy of mine. Coolio. And yeah, I'd be an operator. HUZZAH MONOTONY. However, I am in classes for programming, as well as 3D drawing, so my options are definitely open.

Heh, a long-time friend of mine got into that, started as a parts checker w/ a HS diploma, he was way over-qualified and ended up being his dad's boss within a year, and now they're paying for engineer schooling. That's one of the few places we have a meritocracy and not one based on accreditation, good luck and congrats! Aero-space tech and etc. is pretty spread out nation-wide, and one of those places the US still is the best at. From what I know about your aptitudes, you can do great things, my grandfather started as a draftsman and ended up running a department in a well-known company w/ only an arts degree. Hopefully you're the type of person who will keep the American Dream alive!

Not so, hell to even properly zero up a part you at least have to have an understanding of the basics, a good grasp of 3D space, understanding of the relationship between tool wear and targetted tolerance, how to offset that effect, etc etc. |

I guess if you're doing it on a regular basis it probably gets monotonous.
Some of my best experiences in college learning have been in the machine shop. |

Well Magoo, it sounds like you are off to a good start to the wonderful world of CNC machinery. It could be worse, you could be running a waterjet or EDM.

^^^ I think you have him confused with Klaus.
What you should have said is below: Inb4 he decides that he needs one of these machines in his apartment. |

Maybe I missed it, what CNC are you running? Mill/plasma/lathe? I always hated the mill and lathe CNC's, but loved the plasma. Some of the stuff you cut out is just unbelieveable.
And a lathe=therapy for me. I can stand there and make stuff for hours.
Also DeTrevni, I demand a free sample of every paintball part run you make.
