Went out and got step-daughter her 'bumper car' to learn on. A used 2000 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee, lot of body armor to absorb all the impacts, 4x4 so I do not have to drive her to school in winter (her choice, we are moving to Ceresco about 25 miles north of Lincoln, and she wants to stay at Lincoln High, so she has to get to Lincoln on her own, instead of walk the 2 miles to the school in Ceresco). She will see it when we pick it up tonight, $3700 as is wholesale car. It's blue and has a sunroof, thats my reply when she goes how ugly it is. No rust, still has undercoating, garage kept you can tell as paint is not that bad from weathering.
Good shape considering, only 93,000 on it a few damp leaks here and there, only real chore is to replace power steering top line seal and those dumb plastic over halogen headlight covers. She and her friends get to 'detail' it, as stated piced it up as is ran it through car wash, inside is on her. She gets her permit tomorrow, and let the fun begin. |

I was spoiled. My Buick was my first car. Loved it to death. I'd be more than happy with a Jeep for my first vehicle. That said, I'd also have a lot more fun than I should as well...

I just keep thinking about that insurance commercial with the pink SUV and that guy "I am a teenage girl.........' as he tears off the bumper of a car in the parking lot after bad news on the cell phone.

Personally, I'm glad my parents never got me a car. Not like I'd use it now.

I've bought every car that I've owned by myself with my own money. $800 98 pontiac grand am that basically rusted out underneath me for my first car that lasted about 4 years. $500 87 doodoo brown subaru from my grandma... had 34k miles on it when i bought it. that thing didn't last very long... only a few years.
One thing's for sure... I really enjoy having a nice reliable car now. |

As you all probably remember, my first car was a 1994 Jeep Cherokee.
Lots of things went wrong with it:

There is a huge difference between a 94 jeep cherokee and a 2000 Grand cherokee...
Although the 4.0 liter straight 6 in the regular cherokee is one of the best engines ever.
I think that is a good choice for her, and you bought it right!
I had a 98 cherokee country and loved that thing, it was amazing off road as well. Almost purchased a grand when we got the MDX but I wanted that extra row of seats. (never regretted that either).
But, they tow well, get decent mileage and are reliable. Only risk is roll over, which good training will alleviate that issue.
My parents purchased my sisters car, but I purchased all of my own... And I for sure took better care because of it. My sister kept "forgetting" to change her oil, and dumb dumb parents kept replacing her cars for her when she ruined them by being "forgetful".
It is what it is, if YOU pay for something you will typically take better care of it than if it is provided FOR you.
In most cases... Although I bet I will buy both my daughters cars when they are old enough... And based on the way they take care of the stuff I have given them over the years, I am sure they will take good care... So it could be an education/respect thing. Not really sure...
I would love to get an old jeep to use on our property. I have been considering looking for one to use instead of my quads, or the jacked up golf cart.

As long as they understand the value of a dollar and are responsible in the first place, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You could even have them pay for some portion of it, not necessarily the whole thing. Also, looking into a used Jeep around the same year for myself currently. The $1k '95 Olds I have been in for a few years is starting to become a money pit for repairs, and may just crack in half with all the frame rust it has (not really, but the back bumper will more than likely come off with a good kick).

My father in law bought a brand new Saab 95 Aero back in 2000. The FRONT wheel fell off it with only 19,000 miles.
The driveshaft was welded poorly.

Oh, I forgot, the back left tire had a slow leak in it, and the thing leaked oil like a mother.
It was a good first car, but I was glad when it was gone.

It's a SAAAAFFEEEE SAAAAAAAAB. RIP. My sister owned a ('94?) Saab 900(0? can't remember which) for 3-4 years. We managed to find out that it had actually been in a horrendous accident, after the gas tank failed catastrophically, exposing the fact that the frame was actually two halves welded together. Luckily there was nothing around to ignite the (also luckily) mostly empty gas tank when it happened. |
