@ The guy who said the only way you should win is if everyone has heard of you...those people are exactly what's wrong with the music world today.
That said, I've never heard an Arcade Fire song, and Grammy's are the pointless masturbation of musical egos. Sorry, but the misconception that talent comes with fame / success / awards is offensive to actual musicians.
I'm completely not surprised that Eminem won, he's one of the few actual rappers I hear about in the mainstream world as of late. Lil Wayne need not apply. Of course, I listen to very, very little rap, and most of it is either Tupac or Eminem when I do, so my opinion is fairly uninformed

Rihanna should get half of that trophy, haha. I would say, at least by how it is around my area, Love The Way You Lie was his top song. Its a good song, but overplayed to an extent. I think general listeners wouldnt hear Eminem usually unless its a mix like in LTWYL. And I agree with the Arcade Fire thing. I've heard the name, but I dont know of any of their songs off the top of my head. I love how they were even surprised. The camera goes to them and they look like deer in the headlights. Same with Esperanza Spalding. Everyone was surprised by that.

Oh yeah I agree with the surprise, but some of the posts were downright angry saying Lady Gaga and whoever else should have won it. I just wasn't aware that they were so unknown. To me they seem like a pretty big band, but then again I could probably list off most of what I listen to and get a "who?" reaction from many people. |

Never heard of them. Some of my friends know them, but I am not a fan of their music so I guess it figures.

Hahaha. I want to say "PLAY WHAT IT'S LIKE" a lot. I don't know if I want to piss of a bunch of South Boston/Dorchester rap fans though. I don't think I'll have enough people with me to be too much of a douche. |

Jay-Z deserved it. His album was way better than Recovery. Recovery had two type of songs: depressing or angry. You could swap out most of the lyrical content and plug it to any of those tracks. Production wise, choruses were pretty poor and production nothing too special. And Ems flow fell off hard. He's more choppy, and it just isn't enjoyable. Oh. And The Roots's How I Got Over. That album was just straight amazing. Em's album was third best (amongst the noms) IMO. Edited by jerseypaint - 14 February 2011 at 9:26pm |

I could care less about Arcade Fire. The Bob Dylan & Avett Brothers & Mumford and Sons was awesome.

I have NEVER understood why people hold Jay-Z in such high regard. His rapping is either terribly ordinary or "good" in such an esoteric sense that it's hard to qualify it as anything and can't be compared to anything (and therefore doesn't deserve any awards). That's just me. Reasonable people will disagree. And while Recover wasn't Eminem's best album, and its popularity can, in part at least, be attributed to him involving people like Rhianna or Lil Wayne, the rapping is certainly better than anything any mainstream artist is putting out today (and if being choppy is a problem, Jay-Z has more of a problem with that than Eminem; I can't remember the last song by Jay-Z that he didn't sound choppy, while Eminem has at least shown he can rap rhythmically). And he's added some speed to a few of his songs/verses. I really, REALLY like rap with a little speed in the syllables, even if it isn't actually that fast compared to some other rappers. |

I wouldn't confuse breaking between beats as choppy. I'm talking about Ems random emphasis on words in the middle of his verses. And Jay-Z is hardly ordinary. He has one of the best flows, and has a huge lyrical range. He can throw punchlines, or tell stories; be socially conscience or cocky. Jay is also extremely consistent. The dude can make hits at will, pleasing the top 40 listener and the rap enthusiast. Em just hasn't been the same since his hiatus. |

The Arcade Fire is great, I'm not sure it was the best album of the year since the Grammy's only has 5 nominees per category, there were much better albums out this year. And the fact that Kanye didn't walk away with an award is insane.

It's because his album was released in 2011. His single, though, was released in 2010. |
