Ah... New York, New York.

Dead Censored Last in a new study measuring the overall 'freedom' of each state in the Union.

"By far the least free state in the Union"

I know the term gets thrown around a lot by neo-cons and lunatics, but NY really is on the verge of becoming a 'nanny state.' Its as though Albany really doesn't believe that New Yorkers can take care of themselves, and in an effort to close the gaps created by screwball spending and governing practices- we're taxed out the ass, and regulated into submission.

I really want out, and if I thought I had a job lined up ANYWHERE else....I'd be gone in a heartbeat.

Ohios not too far behind. So happy that I get to pay such high taxes and take advantage of all the amenities this area has to offer..... oh wait.

I'm no expert on the matter, but a glance at the map and the criteria being used to calculate the "freedom" index, shows a bit of an inverse correlation between high rankings of freedom and population, particularly population density.

I'd imagine that is significant in the findings, with the general idea being that the more people you have packed into an area (NY, the Northeast, California, etc.) the more it seems appropriate to enact laws that would seem counter to the "freedom" criteria. It makes more sense, for example, to have a cigarette ban in NYC or LA than Boise. Same with something like handgun laws. Not that it's a justification or anything for those laws, simply an explanation.

Same goes with the taxes. I'd imagine there is more public good - everything from transportation to infrastructure - in the more-populated states than in the middle of Wyoming. And the more public goods being utilized, the more taxes need to be charged to pay for them.

I could be way off, but it just looks like population is one of the main elements of explanation.

TN has an interesting ranking. Great economic freedoms but we suck hardcore at personal freedom. Overall ranked #16.

That site mentions my state being one of the toughest on drug crimes and they say marijuana laws are strict. Strict as they may be local authorities don't enforce them as they should most of the time. This causes me to question the accuracy of their study in other areas since they seem to base the rankings on laws alone, not the enforcement of said laws.

Does looks like some correlation, but then you have Texas, Florida and Georgia who are in the top 10 in populations are ranked in the early teens for freedom. Anomolies? I always consider Florida rather unique though due to it's high reliance on income from tourism taxation. Seems odd because I always thought California should benefit from that as well.

True. I'd imagine that the population density correlation works more for something like a S. Dakota, Idaho and Nevada more than the others.

And I don't think that Texas, Florida and Georgia are anomalies, there is just something else causing a greater effect than population density.

That's the thing with examinations like this: There will never be a sole cause as to why a sate has more or less of these criteria, especially because the criteria are split between social freedoms and economic freedoms.

Even the suggestion of political ideology playing a role:

Doesn't make perfect sense. In the top spot you have New Hampshire, a sate that has gone blue three out of four past presidential elections but elects Republicans to congress. Also in the top-10 is Oregon, not exactly a conservative powerhouse. Colorado is also split, and went blue in the last election.

Wow, we are only 22, that's depressing.

How is Missouri 5, and Indiana 4. That I don't understand.

#3 for Indiana? Are they insane?

We have insane bible-belt liquor laws, smoking bans all over the place, all kinds of crazy nonsense, and now it's illegal to complain when the cops illegally bust in your door.

Shenanigans.

My favorite being that you can buy beer at a convenient store, just not cold. Because I just can't resist downing a cold one in my car on the way home. I am so fragile.

I've never understood the justification behind that. If I'm a serious drunk, what does it matter if it is cold or not?

Same with the rules out west, where you can only buy 3.2 beer in places other than a liquor store.

Kind of out-dated considering one of the points against Texas is it's look on eminent domain, and the governor signed in to law a couple weeks back a stricter law on the matter...

19. Two of the points to have more freedom was to repeal the bicycle helmet law and motorcycle helmet in the state. The third was to make the seatbelt law secondary, instead of primary. I can honestly say that if that's all we have to grumble about, I'll take it.
