One of extra hobbies is I advise Battlefront Minitures on WW2 equipment and force TO&E of the era for the Flames of War game system.
Got in a debate with the head designers and pointed out an error in thier design of a Soviet SU-100 Tank Destroyer and the T-10 BM-3 100mm gun system. According to thier design and now printed specs on the vehicle they gave it a Rate of Fire of 1 per turn. Where as a simular German design the Jagdpanther has a ROF of 3. The designers, yes never in the military college types, insist it is because of the weight of the round fired. The total round weighs in at 34.9 lbs with a projectile weight of 12.1 lbs. Confirmed by US Ordinance as well as Soviet/current Russian Military. The designers insist that the projectile itself weighs 34.9lbs and the total round weight in excess of 70lbs, based on the Wiki rather weak description. They will not admit they are wrong, or ammend the weapon system to reflect in the books. And it seems I am no longer an acceptable source since I questioned with real facts, another of thier errors. They seem to pro bias British and German equipment and rule sets, for example the invincible in game system Tiger II, where the 88mm Kwk 43/ L71 gun outperforms the Russian 122mm, and 100mm, as well as the American 90mm anti-tank gun systems, even in the face of real world provided specifacations. (My method to kill Tiger II's in the game is 155mm Artillery against a top armor of 2, usually takes a turn volley or two, but between 105mm and 155mm artillery I have a potant tank cracker, only weakness the designers have put on Tigers and I am betting a rule change is in the works.) The other is that they have the .50cal M2Hb an actual defined Heavy Machine gun with a ROF of 4 and range of only 16in, yet they have the 7.92mm MG42 ROF 6, and American .30cal M-1917 water cooled MMG ROF 5 with range of 24in. In scale 12in in would be plunging fire for a .30/7.92 round, the .50BMG would go plunging at 18in. They asked me to reseach weapon systems and get mad when I provide real information based on real ordinance information. And for some reason they call it a simulation, best case it is chess with really fancy pieces and some real quirky 'special' rule sets per country represented. |

What developers always fail to get is that the arms race is real, and everyone is trying to do the same thing. Beat the other guy.
Weapons were specifically designed to counter advancements. It's like some FPS's. They don't get that the differences in weapons comes from ergonomics. A G36C will not do more "damage" than an M4, but it is nicer to shoot, while the M4 is easier to manipulate..... KBK |
