We are gearing up to maybe try to buy a house sometime this summer. It's hard to know what will be on the market when, but it's worth the shot.

Other than that, life has generally been a bummer. My great aunt died. My dad is doing way worse. My S/O's sister-in-law has stage three cancer. My grandma's husband has stage four liver and stomach cancer. My research gets getting rejected from journals. That last one isn't as bad as the others but it sure doesn't help.

Dude, that all really really sucks, I feel for you.

On the flip-side, at least your 4yo isn't getting ready to get kicked out of his preschool for being a violent and belligerent a-hole. Doesn't do it at his public pre-k in the afternoon. Doesn't do it at home. Shies away from contact during sparring at TKD, but something about his morning preschool just sets him off.

We didn't get the school that I poured my heart and soul into the bid process for. Sucks for now, but they'll come crawling back in 3 years asking us to bid again. Same happened with our bid for the Avenues School in Manhattan. Now, they're begging us to bid.

I think my car is close to needing some major repairs (again) and was hoping my tax return would cover it. Turns out we're right in the sweet spot for getting screwed with the new tax code. We make too much to get things like EICs, we use a FSA for child care, so don't get to write more than 5k of that off. While the child tax credit doubling helped, the fact that we can't take personal deductions more than makes up for that help in hurt, and being in a high-tax state, we got screwed by the SALT caps. Last year, we saw $3300 back in our pockets. This year we're seeing a couple-hundred more annually in our take-home, but only ~$900 coming back, and that's almost all from the state.

I get that we're "rich" on a national level income-wise, but around here, we're just barely breaking into middle-class.

So yeah, will have to save up a lot more before repairing my car.

It was different... But pretty cool that you can do it anytime, any day in the comfort of your home. And if I get the gig I'll be near DC for 3 weeks! So that'll be cool to be able to go sight seeing on the weekends.

I will buy a house, someday...

I did an interview like that once. Probably one of the most uncomfortable things I've done in my entire life.

I'm gonna go look at houses tomorrow. Pretending to be an adult is weird... and expensive.

That's kind of uncomfortable, like reading off questions to record?

First time having an "on demand" interview. Basically answered questions through my webcam that will be viewed later on.

Welp, looking for a new job again. I absolutely despise working in an office. Have a interview with Geico this week as a claims adjuster.

You have my sympathy, I went through this back in the 90s.  She even tried to have me arrested for sticking a gun in her face but luckily for me she was too specific in the charges and the weapon she accused me of threatening her with was stored (with all my other weapons) in the base armory, at my request, just to make sure I didn't do something stupid like that.

Everyone needs to have had at least one psycho-chick in their past so they can better appreciate the non-psycho-chicks they meet.  (Just one . . . . not multiple one's in a row like I did for a while.  I once had a friend/coworker in the Air Force tell me that his psycho-chick detection method was introducing me to potential girlfriends and if we hit it off he'd run the other way and let me have her.)

Show of hands; who has had this said about them or has said it about someone else.

/End obligatory fart joke brought on via flashback by this being almost the exact same phrase I heard in the Air Force when subordinates started fleeing out of formation during an open ranks inspection I was conducting.  (Yes, it was foul . . . . I moved the formation to the other end of the hanger and started up again where I left off.)

I've never felt like an adult . . . . I wonder how many other people (supposed adults) feel like they are going through life faking it and don't care because they are still having fun?

I'd go this way.

But I've never been accused of acting overly mature . . . or even slightly mature.  (I'm hoping I'll know which route you chose by the time I reach the end of the thread and post this.)

So true; when I was driving a lot for work I was seriously thinking about getting a dash cam.

Not necessarily.  We get a lot of Canadians down here and the only ones that automatically trigger me are the ones from Alberta.  I've decided Alberta driver's must be Canada's version of Kansas drivers.

This is why I'm glad I never put any personal information on Facebook.  To include entering a fake birthday and using a picture of Yul Brynner as my profile pic.  (Of course everyone wishes me happy birthday on the wrong day . . . . but I can live with that.)

My daughter-in-law loves her Honda Fit.  Dependability wise it's hard to go wrong with any Honda.  Now I'm hoping this thread will end up telling me if they got the Fit.

How does one start collecting lanterns?

I collect weird crap.

I bought one for camping and decided I liked playing with them.

I just had a mental image of someone in a large dark basement hovering over a multitude of flickering lanterns saying "myyyyy preciousnessessssss" in a raspy whisper.

One question answered . . . . he went at least partial Texan in Colorado.

But I still don't know if Whale got a Fit.

And the whole thing with DeTrevni and the flood . . . . holy crud!  Glad that all eventually worked out but I need to start lurking again.

Got married 2 years ago and have a son. Just started a new job getting back into machining. I also started posting on this forum on the tippmann website, pretty sure they just forgot about and that's why it's still around. Any way other than that I just get tattoos that my wife "does not approve of, but understands".

Instead of just touting Gun Owners of America and my local gun rights advocacy group, I actually broke down and joined both of them. The NRA is a joke, and I'm happy I never gave them a dime in my lifetime.

And Mattis resigning? Man oh man, I believe the last competent person finally left that administration. I'm all for pulling out, but not by blindly screwing our command or allies.

I saw the word "Chromium" on the internet and had to check in.

No real updates but glad to see you guys still talking about your preferred timber varieties and businesses/products I have never heard of.

I've now been living in England for nearly a year (Jan). They're bastards as expected.Thinking of taking up flying lessons and getting a PPL, starting guitar and burning my career down to start something different (not that i have any ideas what though) but not really started anything on any of these fronts other than 1 "lesson" in a 152.

If Scotchycam ever took off you guys would be thrilled at how pedestrian life has become. Like if David Mitchell's character in peep show got what he wanted all the time.

My wife and I ate at Texas De Brazil. It was great, but it will be a while before I spend that much on dinner again.
