    Posted: 03 July 2007 at 8:46am
Hey, I just bought a Tippmann a5 on Ebay. I'm a little worried that I got a lemon. When I first got it, I took it out of the box and shot through a whole hopper. Later I got out the manual and started to learn how to clean and oil it. Everything is nearly brand new and stock (it has an rt as well). The problem came when I tried to disassemble the power assembly. Everything seemed to be stuck.  Through much shaking and forcing, I finally got them out. It seems that the power tube is too large and it just won't slide freely (or much at all). Currently it looks like I'm going to have to completely disassemble the gun every time I want to oil those parts.

Any idea what the problem would be? I'm thinking either the power tube is too large, or the gun internals are too small (duh...) . Any way, how much does it cost to replace the power tube? Would it maybe be worth trying to sand down the power tube? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of if I try to sand it?

Thanks.

Update:
I looked more carefully and the power tube is bulged where the valve is inserted. I can't even figure out how the valve was inserted with the amount of pressure that is on it being forced into the power tube.. Any ideas about how to fix this?

just for starters, how did it fit into the fun in the first place. Im new but if they where the wrong size i wonder if it would have fired in the first place but however,  the correct size powertube can be purchase from several of the preferred sites. I have ordered from countysports.com and have had nothing but good experience. Im sure some one else will chime in with some good info just hang out for a while.

also see if you can find layout of the gun and see if all your parts are the same, you may just have some thing in the wrong place.

I think I figured it out, but I'm not sure what caused it. The valve was very stuck inside the power tube. I noticed a bulge (and stress mark) around the power tube, right over where the large valve o-ring was. It looked like the o-ring had expanded in place! There was only that one ring of bulge and stress around the power tube(it was clear that it had been put in there and THEN the o-ring expanded)

Through some heat and a lot of fiddling with it, I got the valve out of the power tube. And replaced the o-ring, everything still fits pretty snug because of the slight damage done to the power tube, but they WILL slide out.

My hypothesis on why this happened is that the o-ring froze. Would that cause it to expand like that? Would shooting co2 without any kind of expansion chamber do this?

Thanks for your help!

Well from my experience here's what I find:

The bolt assembly is tight unless you loosen all the screws to the point they almost fall out. The assembly will slide out the back no problem. As for the valve in the power tube, the valve is very stubborn to get out. Every A5 I have worked on has the tube valve has been difficult. I don't recommend pulling the valve out of the tube every time. Mainly I would just remove the o-ring(with a small pic) and add oil to it. Then kinda roll it back in place. Make sure you put them back in order this way: metal washer, then O-ring on top. I clean my gun about 2 times a month. It works great.

Also a quick way to oil all the inner parts of your marker is to remove the tank from the gun. Inside where you screw the tank on is a small hole. Add 2-3 drops of marker oil, then put your tank back on. Fire your gun about 5-10 times. The oil will get all over.

I also have a power tube problem. I have a tippmann A-5 stealth package. I removed the tombstone adapter (hope you kept your manuals) and the gun accidentally dry-fired. I looked up into the power tube and I noticed a tiny o-ring in the little slot, and a spring out of place. After much fidgeting, I managed to push the o-ring back up towards the barrel, slide the tombstone back in and put it away.

About a week later I'm ready to play, so I take my gun out, screw it in, turn the air on and *fshhh* my almost full 9 oz can of CO2 is gone in about 5 seconds. The air leaked in 3 places: out of the barrel, and on both ends of the high-pressure air coil connecting my marker to the tank. They were all 3 very cold. Come to think of it air probably came out of the hopper too.

Logically this would be a problem with the power tube. Has anyone heard of this problem before? Should I just get a new tube? Thank you.

Sounds like that's your problem. The o-ring you described should be pushed towards the back of the gun when looking through the slot on the bottom. This o-ring goes on top of a washer which sits on the spring you saw. If that o-ring is out of place then you will have some leaking issues. I would take the tombstone out and check to make sure you have the valve internals in the proper order (use the manual as a guide if needed) and then try again. If that doesn't work then there may be a more serious problem.

Try to post a pic to show the issue.

Come to think of it...I believe I remember seeing a washer on the ground but I didn't think anything of it. Is it a special washer of some kind? Or just a particular size? The manual does not include any schematics about the power tube though so it's very difficult to consult it. The internals are in proper order though.

The o-ring should be on the other side of the tombstone slot and should sit on top of the washer which is on top of the spring. It is very important to have all of these parts in the proper order and location or your gun will not work correctly. I need to clean out my gun so I'll work on getting you a picture.

Allright. Well then I'm missing my washer. Is it a tippmann-only washer? Or is it a washer I can get at a hardware store? Reason why is I have a paintball game tomorrow and tippmann is shipping me a new power tube valve but it won't get here in time, if I can run out and get a washer that'd be great.

If you need a new power tube, go with the JCS Red Hot, it works great.

Edit: Also, check this info out about the Red Hot.  It describes in the detail section that Tippmann is making a new vavle style in their A-5s (first I've heard of it).  Maybe you have an old gun and new internals or vice versa.

You could probably find that washer at a hardware store but I'm not sure what the size is so you'd have to bring the valve with you and test some.

Thank you for your assistance, however I was able to get a new a-5 free of charge from Academy. It didn't work, but one of my friends who was once an engineer at a reputable car dealership was playing with us and he fixed it! Thank you for your help, I wouldn't have bloody known what was wrong with my gun without ya'll, and you can bet I'm never touching it again unless I'm playing a game.

or oiling it, it is a must that you oil your marker, or O-rings will break.

You're better off getting to know your marker inside an out.  You're going to have issues with it at some point and its better to be able to fix it yourself rather than rely on others.  I'm mechanically challenged and it only took me a couple of disassembles/reassembles to be able to do it without a manual/help.  Its actually pretty easy.

well yeah. I know how to assemble it correctly. But every time I open her up something goes awry or doesn't end up right.

Well, definitely take it apart occasionally for maintenance but if you don't want to fully disassemble it then you could just lurk in the maintenance forum and pay attention to problems that others have and how they are solved. That way you know what to do if you encounter a similar issue.
