CVX Valve Lifespan?

There are several reasons for velocity problems, but just the valve wearing out is likely not the problem. Until I switched to a low pressure valve I was using a well used marker that had seen nearly 70 cases of paint through it. The type of wear one might see is the soft surface on the poppet valve not sealing giving you noticeable leaks

Variations in pressure many times is traced to the two screws on the right side of the marker that hold the valve tightly in place. If one or both of those screws are loose or missing the valve can move enough that there is shot to shot inconsistency.  Problems range from wild velocity variations to the inability to adjust the velocity as high as needed.

The body of the valve is aluminum and the over-tightening of these screws can strip the threads. Sometimes reinstalling the screws with LocTite (Red or Blue Gel) can hold them in place well enough to function perfectly.
