I'm new to owning a parintball marker and picked up a 98 custom at a pawn shop.  The marker has a cyclone feeder and after playing around with it, there is a problem.
With the hopper off, when I pull the trigger the paddles in the feeder are not advancing (sometimes).  I advance them manually and then it may work once or twice but that is it.  I took the feeder apart and everything looks okay ( to this newb anyway).  I didn't see any wear or obvious problems.

One thing to point out is that I am using small co2 tubes (yep the old style) because I don't have a tank of any kind yet.  Could that cause this kind of a problem?  Just not getting enough air from the source?

I look forward to any advice you can offer.

Thanks

Sounds like that might be the issue. The Cyclone runs off of exhausted air from the valve which is captured by the port in the power-tube and directed to the ratchet system that runs the "stars" or "sprockets" which feed the rounds. Insufficient air will prevent it from operating properly. Using 12g CO2 cartridges means you're getting just enough air to fire the marker (which requires 600-800psi to operate) but not enough to divert sufficient enough air to the cyclone.

Now, that doesn't mean that there isn't the possibility of an issue with the ratchet within the cyclone feeder itself, but you won't really know until you fire it up with a full CO2 bottle rather than the 12g powerlettes.

Just so you know, Dick's Sporting Goods, Modell's, Sports Authority, and Wal-Mart all usually have CO2 tanks and can either perform fills, or have a swap-out option (kind of like propane tanks you get for your grill) which allows you to swap your empty tank for a full one. My personal suggestion is to pick up a 20oz CO2 tank. That should last approximately 800 shots on a 98 custom.

Welcome to one of the most fun games/sports there is to play! If you have any other questions at all, feel free to ask!
<Removed overly wide sig. Tsk, you know better.>

Thanks tallen,

I was thinking that may be the case, but wasn't sure.  I am looking to invest in a good tank from the shop that I go for playing but that won't be for another couple of weeks.  I guess I will have to find out then as to if the feeder is working.

Again thanks

Your problem is your air source. Once you get a tank, check to see if your cyclone cycles. If it doesn't check that the ratchet in the cyclone isn't stripped.
