The Story:

“The Duke’s Family Reunion”
A Black Cat Scenario
By
Jonathan Foust

“Paff me that potater salad, ma,” cousin Cletis was yelling though the gap where his front teeth should have been.  The Hazzard County Park and Fairgrounds was full to bustin’ with every last Duke that could be rounded up and shoved into a T-Shirt.

The second anniversary of the big Hazzard County War was here, and as usual the Duke Boys sent invites out to every man-jack (and woman-jack) who had helped them fight Boss Hogg and his cronies those long two years ago.
Bo and Luke stood up from their picnic tables and held a pair of grape Faygos aloft, sparkling smiles lighting up the shadows under the awning overhead.  “We just want to begin by thanking all of y’all for coming out today,” Bo began.

“Without the help of all our kin we’d be livin’ somewhere else right now, instead of right here in beautiful Hazzard County.”

Luke was interrupted by the loud slow clap of a pair of sarcastic hands from the rear of the gathering.  All eyes turned toward the source of the sound.

“Very touching, very flippin’ touching,” a square-jawed man spat from behind his dark sunglasses.  His suit was impeccable, a red hankie sticking from the pocket.  A shiny gold watch dangled from his wrist, its diamond studded band catching glints of sunlight as it jangled with each clap.  “You know, boys, with speeches like that, a guy might almost think that you had completed more than just a fifth grade edgy-cation.  Ha, ha HA!!”

Uncle Jessie stood up angrily from his seat and pointed a powerful finger at the intruder.  “And just who in blue blazes are you?!”

The man smiled.  “Oh, how rude of me, My name is Giuseppe San Genovese, and I am the new owner of Hazzard County.”

A roaring murmur went up from the crowd.
Bo quieted the protests.  “That’s impossible.  Hazzard County isn’t for sale!”

“Well,” Giuseppe began, “Not all of it.  My development firm entered into a partnership with a Mr. Hogg.  Between he and myself we own well over half the county.  By the time my associates talk to the townsfolk I’d say that we should be well on the way to developing the whole flippin’ county.”

“No way,” Luke spat.  “The folks around here’ll never sell to you.”

Giuseppe smiled.  “Meet my associate, Mr. Carlito.”  He motioned to a wall of a man with a bald head and a toothpick sticking out of one side of his mouth.  “Mr. Carlito specializes in making offers that people cannot refuse.”

Cousin Daisy stood from her plastic lawn chair, spilling her macaroni casserole on the ground.  “You won’t get away with this, San Jenny-Vista.  You try it and you’ll have a war on your hands.”

Giuseppe’s face straightened.  He looked over the collection of rabble before him and a cold grin sliced its way across his face.  “You want a war?  Bring it on.”
