The Story:

GI JOE II: The Return of Cobra
By Jonathan Foust

Duke stood looking out at the assembled group of Joes before him.  Never had a more elite force been gathered in one place at the same time.  But of course, never had such a threat reared its head before.

“Atten-SHUN!” Flint yelled to quiet the murmurs of the crowd.  Duke surveyed the group with a harsh eye, squinting against the intense rays of the sun.

“As you have probably noticed, there are a lot of faces here today that you haven’t seen in a while.  That is because the President has mobilized the entire Joe team.  All units are on active status, all government frequencies are being cleared for our use, and all resources of the United States and her allies are being placed at our disposal.

“As you all may remember, we faced Cobra last year and fought them to a standstill over possession of a certain mind-control device dreamed up in the shiny head of a certain evil design genius named Dr. Mindbender.  We managed to come out on top last year, but to our discredit, Cobra maintained control of their device.  Our HUMINT tells us that they have managed to marry that device to a high frequency weapon that Destro had shipped out of Asia six months ago, and they have created a weapon that uses sound waves to split the human skull.  They have tested the device, and it works.

“Sadly… three operatives died bringing us this information.”

The assembly remained in stony silence, the weight of the situation sinking in.

“Within three days’ time, Cobra intends to take control of a communications satellite that will allow them to broadcast their killer wave anywhere in the world and over the space of thousands of miles.  Our mission, the mission of the entire team, is to ensure that this does not happen.

“Snake Eyes and Jinx,” Duke barked.  “You will be our forward reconnaissance unit.  Report back with anything you see.  If you are forced to engage, make sure that you do so quietly—and leave no trace.”  The pair nodded silently.

“Long-Range and Low Light, you are in charge of the sniper units.  Once we hit the beaches of Cobra Island your job will be to shoot any snake that moves.  Leatherneck and Beachhead, you are in charge of the amphibious landing.  Wild Bill and Slipstream will take care of air cover while Flint and I retain overall command.

“You have your orders, people.  Load up!  The planes will be wheels-up in three hours.  Yoooooo JOE!”

In the depths of Cobra headquarters a small green screen flashed to life in the armrest of Cobra Commander’s chair.  At first, the face was that of a GI Joe commando, but slowly it morphed into that of Zartan, the Cobra changeling.  “Cobra Commander,” he said in a low grave tone, “they are coming.”

“Excellent,” Cobra Commander said through gritted teeth.  “I believe that when they arrive they will find Cobra Island a most inhospitable vacation resort.”

The sounds of Cobra Commander’s crackling laughter echoed through the great hall of Cobra Mountain and out into the dying light of day.
