Topic: DIY smoke bombs Posted: 12 February 2008 at 7:59pm |
I imagine this has been done/talked about on here, but i am a newbie, so humor me. I have seen lots of things on the world wild cyber net thingy talking about how to make smoke bombs. it seems like equal parts sugar and potasium nitrate when mixed/boiled up togeather (i think, it's been a while since i looked)will create some kind of syrupy goo. that can be placed in a container with a wick, and once it has cooled/harden up it can be ignited to create smoke. lots of different receipes, but they all had the same basic ingredients. and some also say to add different things to make different colors. i have played a few scenario games with smoke, and it rocked! but i can't see dropping $4-$5 a peice on pre made smoke bombs.
I have always thought this would be sweet. i used to play all the time, and then all of my friends stopped, so i have been on the sidelines for a while. needless to say i am getting back into it, and i have always wanted to do this. (but not in my ghillie, i don't want to catch fire ) the one thing these receips say is that this will create a lot of heat. my solution would be to use dummy gernades. 1) this will look BA to the unfamiliar. 2) they are metal, and not likely to melt. 3) i would probably paint them neon or somthing so i could find them/refill them after i used them. 4) perfect for throwing. 5) it gives me a reason to look like the uni-bomber while concocting these in my garage.
i think the trick would be finding a good wick material. Then in game play just unscrewing the tops, light and throw. hopefully i can still prevent forrest fires though.
what do ya'll think? anyone got some experience?

so you're asking for help in making a smoke bomb that looks like a real grenade, and you're want to light it off around people....

Sugar + potassium nitrate when boiled and hardened will definately make a nice smoke bomb. I've done it. Trust me, its cool. We just put it in small tin cans with matches sticking out (put in while the syrup is cooling) and then when you light the matches and chuck it (at the start of a game usually) it will make some white smoke.
Mind you, the smoke is thinner and lighter so if it's windy it won't remain at all. We used them inside of a blown out building where there's often a meeting of teams and a firefight and it made for some cool CQB play. Kept you on your toes thats for sure, and the smoke smelt kinda like..well..buring sugar.

carguy, goto a fireworks site and look at 1 minute smokes. They're usually about $2 a piece.

Good to know, and as for the first comment, yes, thats the idea. If you are implying that i am trying to blow people up for real, or scare them into thinking that, that is lame. the 1 minute smoke price isn't bad, but iwas looking into it, and the salt peter plus sugar is soooo cheap, and i like the idea of doing colored smoke too.
anyone done the colors?

Salt peter smoke bombs can be real dangerous. The smoke is poisonous to breathe, and they burn extremely hot and fast, so catching fire to your surroundings is a real possibility. Because they do burn so fast, a lot of DIY model rocket builders use the recipe to make cheap homemade rocket engines (the little ones) so if what ur building it in doesn't have adequate porting, the pressure has the potential to shoot it around.

apparently you can't read, so i'll be short. it's dangerous, reckless and not good for the sport. potassium nitrate smokes...and where there smoke? yes there's fire, there may not be visible flames but it is a combustion reaction and a fair amount of heat is released.
putting the smoke bomb mixture in a dummy grenade is a bad idea on a whole different level.

Why? Its not like he plans to walk around the neighbor hood or go to school with them strapped to his belt. Just because it looks realistic? So do a lot of my guns. Potassium Nitrate and Sugar IS a bad idea however. I'd be better to buy something, which you will know is a controlled reaction. I'll be posting my grenade design in a few days. On a side note, recipes from the Anarchist cookbook should NOT be posted on the forum. This thread should maybe be impounded or editted.

tippmann freak why should this be impounded?!?
I am not suggesting making an explosive bomb by any means. i think a gernade housing is ideal becasue 1) strong enough not to melt. 2) heavy enough not to be projected. 3) the "bladder" has enough volume to hold ample amount of material, yet if filled only about 33%-50% the flame shouldn't get too high as to ignite the surrounds. 4) i stated that i would paint them neon, in order to find them after, and also to cut down on the realism. my friends and I play in the woods only, so i think this would be a nice spin.
the realism argument is pretty weak, due to tippmanns being the most realistic markers on the market. and have you ever read the MSDS on the smoke produced from smoke bombs? do you know that any kind of smoke is considered dangerous? in all reality this would be used in an out door setting, with ample room for it to disperse. i don't think smokebombs are going to insight a panic when used in the context of a paintball game.
this is hardly wreckless, or dangerous. my plan was to make my own and do some trial and error with ratios and amounts SO AS NOT TO BE DANGEROUS. the dangerous implications are pretty sad, do you think this is the place I would go to find out about bombs/explosives? this is where i am going to try to find somthing that is commonly used in the sport of paintball, in hopes of finding some people with experience and intelligence. not just lame mis-conceptions.

A commercial field will not under any circumstances let you light off a pyro device on the field.
And I wouldnt reccomend doing it if youre playing outlaw ball somewhere either. If you manage to light someones property on fire, I doubt youre going to have fun explaining that to the cops/fire department.
Do it if you want, but Tippmann wont allow discussions of dangerous things like bomb making on their forum. Sorry, locking this thread.
