Chuckle. Not much of a golf player?

They use the dimples so that you can control where it goes, which isnt always straight, right? you use the dimples to "catch" the air so it pulls itself in the somewhat desired direction... also to help the ball travel farther in some cases...

we only want our paintballs to go one direction... straight.. which is why we dont need dimples , and at the velocities we shoot, anything past 180-220ft doesnt usually break anyway due to friction of the air and spherical shape

no? anything not smooth will always be less aerodynamic than anything smooth

i seriously doubt taking a hammer to your car and dimpling it will improve your aerodynamics

It's pretty cool when they take a swinging machine that will hit a golfball the exact same every time and take a perfectly round golfball and having it hit it and then a dimpled golfball, the dimpled golfball travels much further.

The funny thing is that this has actually been produced before.  When I got into paintball, I bought a container of 500 dimpled paintballs.  They werent terribly expensive, and I think were produced to test the waters by some big name company.  I wish I had at least kept the box, but I think they were called 'Amp' or something.

Golfballs only go straight when you hit them just right. Ask anyone who as a wicked slice, like me; when the ball slices, it leaves going straight, but it has a side spin on it.

With the exception of the flatline barrel and Apex, we can't control the direction that a paintball will spin. And those barrel put just enough spin on a paintball that the trajectory is perfect. If there were dimples to catch the air better, a Flatline would curve VERY dramatically upward after it left the barrel.

Well that patent was made 2 years ago and it still has never caught on so... that probably says something.

Besides, even if this design did work, these paintballs would be AMAZINGLY expensive anyway.

I have just realized that most people who shoot each other with paintballs must not golf, because if you know anything about golf, you know that dimpled golf balls travel up to twice as far as smooth ones.  The more surface area of the golfball that is covered in dimples, the further it goes, which is why golf ball manufacturers are always patenting their dimple patterns.
