I finally think I've made my choice as a first gun, a CCI Phantom. Yes I know it's a pump, but I've heard they are fun, more of a challenge, and exploit the weaknesses in your game. So before i go buy the $259 one with 45 grip, vertical air, and 12 gram quick change, do you think this gun would be fun/good to start out with?

Well, have you ever played pump before? Because it's one of those things that most people either love, or hate. You're going to be severely out-numbered in firepower and it'll probably take you a few days of play to even shoot anyone if you're playing at a field with a lot of people. I'm not trying to discourage you from playing pump, just saying that throwing down $260 on a new phantom when you've never played pump before is a bit silly. Personally, if I were you, I'd either find a pump to borrow or rent for the day and see how I liked it. Also remember that 12g cartridges are a lot more expensive than bulk CO2 in the long run, so CA/Open Class play is going to be less expensive than SC play. As for the gun itself. Phantoms are nice, but if you're insisting on starting out with a pump without trying someone else's for a day or two, I'd suggest looking into an old Maverick, Trracer, or Hammer pump to start out with in open-class configuration (hopper and constant air) rather than straight up stock-class. That way, if you don't like it, you aren't out of any money and you can sell the equipment you purchased for as much as you bought it for.
Also, $259 for a phantom is a bit pricey if you don't mind going used. $200 Right feed w/ vert feed breech on mcb SC AND Vert Feed Black and Gold Phantom $185 on MCB Nice Micro Phantom VSC for $160 on MCB See what a little looking can save you? |

Gonna have to agree with tallen. I am not the biggest fan of pumps (but thats just me... i can appreciate everyone who uses them). I love accuracy and not wasting paint but that is what a mechanical semi auto is for for me.

Like tallen seid "either love em, or hate em", I think pumps are for the xepert players? But ive been told if your going to use them for the first time (as in your new to the sport) your going to get frustrated quickly. But if you dont mind not "owning" it's a gread learning curve and you will get better in time. |

If you are going pump with a first gun I would get an open class gun. I only play pump and love it, as a start, meh maybe not the greatest idea, it can be best to get the basics down first. Pick up a decent used mech gun and then if you still want to play pump go for it a little later on.

If you've got a good pump group in your area, by all means, go with a pump. Having experienced players around to watch/follow/ask questions of is the best way to learn any particular style of play.
I'm one of the few, but I really don't like the phantom. They are great guns, but too small for me. I still use a nelspot 007 regularly and like the heft of snipers for open class play. Phantoms feel like toys to me, just TOO small and light... Like they said before, if you can, try the different guns out. Any field proshop worth its salt will let you test some guns before you buy one. And I'll also back up Tallen, buying a good, used gun is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying from CCI if you look around for the good deals. |

I started with an open class pump, and a cruddy one at that (BladeII), and still had a great time as well as saved alot of cash. But then again, I love being disadvantaged and love the adrenaline rush. I would really suggest that rent a semi and see if you can borrow a pump or something to see the differences in the feel of the game before you go all out for a phantom.
