does a tank cover for HPA do anything besides stop the tank getting scratches?

sometimes, it will improve the look of your marker.  Depends also on the color of your marker to match it.

Get a cover. It will protect the Carbon Fiber from getting ripped or taired, which can result in not being able to use your tank. Also, they look cool, and help keep the tank from sliding around when you're hugging it into your body.

Most covers have a rubber-type shoulder rest to them to keep them from slipping off your shoulder while you are aiming. But the main reason to get one is to protect you $200 tank form nicks and scratches that will make it fail hydrotest.
