Man this is like going back to school.  I read and read and the more I read the hazzier everything gets.

I played a little woodsball about 15 years ago.  The other day one of the guys I used to play with said we should all go out and get paintball gear to play again since he has 2 acres of woodland around his house.

My how things have changed.  He dug out his F2 illustrator and a PMI Trracer both needing considerable work (15 yrs with nothing to preserve the seals, rings, etc.)  So we will be needing some new gear.  My wife wants to play too so Her and I need to get ourselves outfitted to play.

I've done some searching in the area and found two very nice woodsball fields that hold large events throughout the year, so we plan to participate at these.

My research has led me to Tippmann as the supplier of our markers, but I lack the vocabulary to grasp alot of what is said about the newest stuff on the market.

I am 90% convinced to get custom pro's for us to use.  They are tough, simple, reliable, and cost effective.  Not to mention all the upgrades available.

What I was looking for was advice about what to use for an air system, goggles, and any other important things a new player might need to consider before heading back the fun of busting balls.  I'd appreciate your comments and opinions on what the best route to take is in todays huge market.

when i come up with something i'll put it here

meh ud probably be better off with a 98 custom. co2 will be fine probably a 12-16oz tank is good. thermal goggles like the PCS 20/20 (which may be out of your price range) but definatly thermal.

meh you used to play to you dont need any noob tactics advice.

The Custom Pro is a great gun with tons of upgrades. For air, I'd suggest a 12 or 20oz CO2 tank or, if you have the money, HPA tanks. It's much cleaner and more readily available at big events. For goggles, look into thermal lenses. JT and VForce both make nice masks at a lot of price ranges and are two reliable mask companies. Everything else is personal preference.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome back into the sport!

Well, welcome (back.) to paintball. I my self had a custom pro but just shipped it out to trade for some other things. The custom pro is a very nice, reliable gun and since you will be playing woods ball it's durability will be a very nice feature. In the future, once you get more into paintball, you will probably want to get some upgrades for your gun. Always start off upgrading with anice barrel. I would suggest a Lapco Bigshot or a J&J ceramic. Both very nice barrels. Never really go above 14" or it will just take more c02 to push the ball out the barrel. For faster fire I would suggest a Response trigger or an E-Grip but to keep up with the higher ROF(Rate of Fire) you will need an electric hopper. Upgrading to air would also make your gun alot consistent, meaning more accurate shots, no velocity spikes and I guess it's alot cheaper in the long run. Do some research around the interweb and use the search but at the top of the page. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.Hope I was help, some other people will probably be alot of help too.

Maybe consider the A-5.  I have ran with a 98C for most of my playing days and it's a really good gun. The first thing that might be good to get as an upgrade right off the starting line and would give you an edge on the game is a new barrel.  Look into the Bigshot or a Freak.

it ends like this...school sucks
NASA and the Americans spent millions of dollars and hundreds of hours to develop a pen that would write in space.....The Russians used a pencil.

Ok, you will be fine with any version of the Model 98, whether it be the Custom pro or the regular Custom.  Just depends on how much you want to spend.

To keep it cheap, Co2 will be fine.  In order to reduce the number of fills during play, I would suggest a 20oz tank, and maybe another tank as a spare so you can just put in a new one without having to get a refil the same day.

For a Mask, the Dye Proto Switch is a very well designed setup, and also very affordable, just a bit more than $25 at most places.  The design makes it very easy to take out and clean or replace the lens.  It is also very comfortable.

Before doing any upgrades to your gun, you need to figure out for yourself what you think it needs.  A new barrel is the first obvious upgrade: you can't go wrong with a Lapco Bigshot, Custom products Medium bore 1 peice, or J&J Ceramic barrels - all are good and around $50.

I would buy the gun, use it for a while and figure out what it is you want to improve on the gun.  Do you want to make it lighter? (remote line) Do you want a nicer trigger pull? (E-Grip)  Do you want an easier and less wasteful velocity adjustment method? (Rear Velocity Adjuster)  Just play with it for a bit, take it apart and mess with it and soon you will be as knowledgable as some of us.

a cheap anti fog mask would be the proto EL switch. VERY NICE mask. But what i would do is get 98's and upgrade them.

Thanks for all the advice.  Next Sunday I plan to take a trip to a local pro shop and scope out the prices (hopefully they stock CP's).  At first, all I want (or can afford) is the basic gun with out upgrades, but it looks like eventually I will end up with compressed air, some sort of milsim kit - probably the opsgear G36, definitely the E-grip, and some other ad ons like red dot scope and a light ( we might have some night games ), mods to make adjustments faster.  Will the big shot barrel work with the opsgear kit?  If not what will?

thanks again.

The Lapco should work with the shroud. If I were you I would buy a 98 Custom for now, a 20 oz tank, a 9 oz tank and a Proto Switch EL. Then buy whatever you think you want. The Opsgear shroud really will not improve your game much at all, but make your gun alot cooler. In paintball, you really dont use sights that much either (I have a little $10 sight). Id suggest just getting the marker and deciding what you want next after playing with it.

Hope I helped

I say buy the Proto FS, not the EL. Best to buy a good mask first, rather than one you will have to upgrade later. The bigshot is an awesome barrel or if you like quieter then the J&J is great too and as far as length you will probably only need a 12".
Now if your wife is of smaller frame and not used to carrying around a huge weight, go for a 12oz because 20's are Massive. Only thing I see 20oz's good for are really really long scenario events that you dont intend to go back and fillup on, or you intend to run remote with a Good vest/pack. Good luck and have fun.

EonNightblade... You don't use a stock and a bottle on the ASA at the same time, you remote it... If you dont it kind of defeats the purpose in the stock.

Any Tippmann will bring you hour after hour of playing with little fear of mechanical failure.  I use a customized A5... R/T trigger... I change back and forth between my flatline barrel and Apex... my 14 year old has a souped up 98c... my 10 year old daughter has a new 98c w/ ACT and the only upgrade is a 14" razor barrel.  We aslo hae an old Procarbine that I loan to rookies we take along.

Tippmann rocks.
