The island of Grenada became independent of British rule in 1974, and a coup in 1979 had placed in power a radical by the name of Maurice Bishop. A staunch radical, Bishop proceeded to strengthen ties with the Soviet Union and Cuba. Both of these governments were eager to have another Communist ally in the Caribbean. Work was begun on an airstrip and other facilities under the guise of "promoting tourism."
In 1983 an ultra-radical faction from within Bishop's ruling New Jewel Movement, the People's Revolutionary Army, put him under house arrest and took control. They later executed Bishop and several of his aids. As the coup spread throughout the island the United States became concerned for the safety of some eight hundred U.S. citizens attending medical school at Saint George's University. Calls coming in from other Caribbean nations were the final nudge, and on October 19th planning for deployment of 1,400 troops into the area was initiated. After Grenada was overflown by several Lockheed SR-71s and more information was gathered, then US President Ronald Reagan ordered an intervention to be initiated on 25 October 1983. The operational objectives were to restore order and rescue some eleven hundred U.S. citizens. After that the goal was to introduce democracy to the island nation. The invasion would be known as "Operation Urgent Fury." Some players have stated that they were not crazy about the area we have been using for scenarios at Cousins. We have been listening and I went out and scouted the entire property (300 acres) searching for the best area to use.
For those of you who attended that UWL at Cousins in Texas you may remember this area as it was one of the most popular fields used. * Both HQs will be in the shade. * Both hospitals will be in the shade. * The field has multi-level terrain, a ravine, and lots of large trees and SHADE. * Camping, air, and supplemental paint sales will be centrally-located in the parking and camping area south of the southern boundary of the playing field. * There is a good, hard-packed road for tanks. Interesting notes
On the historic operation in 1983: • Urgent Fury was the most “top-heavy” operation in military history, having more officers per capita than any other military operation to date. • Due to the rapid nature that the US forces deployed, and the relative infancy of joint-forces operations, inter-branch communication and cooperation were not well prepared. This resulted in a major lack of communication between the different branches. Perhaps the most famous of the fiascoes was depicted in the Clint Eastwood movie Heartbreak Ridge. Enemy machineguns pinned down navy SEALs assaulting the Governor-Generals mansion. Two American gunships flew overhead but the men on the ground were unable to communicate directly with them. As a result, one man actually placed a phone call from the mansion to Fort Bragg N.C to request a fire mission. Despite all this, the casualty rate for United States forces were only 19 dead and 116 wounded. The Grenada military suffered 49 dead and 358 wounded. The Cuban count was 29 dead and over a hundred wounded. • This operation demonstrated the amazing battle-readiness of US Forces, especially the 82nd Airborne. The first aircraft carrying division troopers touched down at Point Salines just 17 hours after notification back at Fort Bragg. On the features of the event this weekend: • The propaganda flyers you may see on the field are duplicates of the actual pamphlets distributed by the 4th Psychological Operations Group during Operation Urgent Fury in 1983. • The military units used on the ID cards are actual units that were deployed for the operation. Viper Enterprises would like to thank the members of the U.S. armed forces, both past and present, and the members of the militaries of our allies, for their dedications and sacrifices throughout history and today. The price of freedom and security is paid in blood. It takes a brave person to step forward and into the front lines of the military machine that is our nation’s defense, and often the world’s. So the next time you find yourself face-to-face with a veteran or active duty soldier, you might shake their hand and say thanks. Edited by ViperScenarios - 26 August 2011 at 3:43pm |

Since this is what has been advertised on their site we are going to go ahead and stick to that. $50 pre reg for this twenty-six hour scenario will be available for $50 until midnight September 1st.

Great news! According to weather.com shows Dallas area temps well above 100 this coming weekend, weather.com and the National Weather service both show a major cooling trend starting Monday, with cooler temps for Operation Urgent Fury!
