Has anyone seen the new video Ipod yet? One of my friends is looking at them, but the screen is like 3 inches, so I say "What's there to look at?"

I'm so jealous now, my mom, dad, step dad, all 5 of my uncles, and my 2 aunts have Ipods, and I'm the only one without one.

Overshooting,
America's greatest pastime.

Friend has one.  Its small (slim).  Haven't seen good video on it though, because he messed up the compression for the video he tried to put on it.

When you use Zen's tool to convert the files, it lowers the resolution to 320x240. Go with the iPod.

i have a zen vision. i'm sure you can go look up the specs for yourself but basically, bigger screen, better resolution, more colors, built in mic, built in fm tuner, fm recording, organizer, built in compact flash card slot(types I and II), longer battery life, and the zen is compatible with more file types than the iPod's two. and if you get the extended life battery, you get 9 to 10 hours of video, 26 hours of music.

i love my vision. i'm glad i waited for it. i guess the only drawback is it's only available with a 30 GB hard drive. but then again, you won't go through that much music/pictures/video in a week's worth of browsing. the display is absolutely amazing. oh, and the little built in speaker isn't half bad either. it plays music rather loud. btw, the CF slot reads high speed cards too. it goes ZZZZZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM.

i think i still have my video hosted. i'll probably make a new video of it this week while i am out of school. A, i'll run through the features more thoroughly. B, i'll try to downsize the mov file from my camera but not convert, to retain quality. and C, i got around to trimming my fingernails lol. you'll see if you watch the vid.

HV's Zen Vision quick demo

forgive the quality... 170 MB mov file compressed to a 10 MB avi...

my vision next to my friend's iPod mini. again, forgive the quality it's the best my camera phone will do.

in conclusion, if you want a smaller, simpler player, get the new iPod. but if you place importance on performance and quality, look into a Creative Labs Zen Vision. it's all an issue of your needs/wants.

*edit Sammy, do you even have proof of that or are you going on what someone else told you? i use my own software and most of the avi's i've downloaded are a little bit less than the 640 x 480 display. and not to mention, compare the size of the screen to the file's dimensions. i tried a 320 x 240 avi on there. i told it to fit to screen, it looked fine. same with stretch to screen, looked fine. difference being one action keeps the aspect ratio's intact, the other fills the screen both ways.

You know, I tried to make a post that might kind of justify an Ipod over a Vision, but other than the scroll wheel and price, the Ipod has nothing over the Vision. The $100 extra really does seem like it is worth the money.

Hard drive size, ease of usability. The Zen I read is not very detailed in getting movies onto it.

sammy, **edited**, seriously. you don't even own one.

the zen utilities is gives you are much better than the old nomad interface. the interface can be done through creative mediasource, a zen utility program with custom menus and such, windows explorer(my favorite) it's dragging a file over with a folder structure already defined on the zen. and of course, it also will sync up with wmp 10.

so please tell me where in your infinite knowledge, sammy, the zen is confusing to add media of any type.

do you want a screenshot of my view in Explorer?

Sammy, you don't own one, therefore you really can't comment without citing examples from your 'readings'.

The hard drive you cannot deny. And I said I READ IT, I never said I had used it. But, here ya go.

Quote The bad: Limited viewing angle; no line-in audio or video recording; doesn't display album art; can't schedule radio recordings; no kickstand; no easy way to watch DVDs; TiVo To Go requires file conversion and third-party MPEG-2 decoder; incomplete documentation; subpar, audio-only battery life.

Quote and copying and converting files can be a time-consuming hassle, especially for novices, as Creative really skimps on the instructions.

I wasn't trying to be a **edited** or anything, I merely commented on what I had read.

I started writing this before you said that Funky.

of all the reviews i've read, their demands have mostly been a little far fetched... their definition for limited viewing angle as a bit OMG'ish... true blacks, yes, limited angle...but watching it with friends at school today, we both saw the picture just fine at angles other than perpendicular.

line in recording, it could use that feature yes. but it's not essential. i don't see the ipod doing it either yet nobody **edited**ed about it there. as for video input, not necessary, it's not the ARCHOS model that acts like tivo with an 8" lcd. let's keep the design practical.

album art. don't know how many of you display that in itunes...but with my 8000+ song library, i really can't keep track of that. plus, they can address many of the public's wishes with firmware upgrades to include album art and other ideas. like video playlists.

scheduled radio recording...might be cool, again, think upcomming firmware upgrades...

no kickstand, don't be lazy. i take too much pride in my vision to set it down on a desk to watch, plus i can adjust the angle better in hand. additionally, the case i want to get for it is most likely going to include a stand. also, it has a small docking station. there's a stand for you. wider base, lower center of gravity, less likely to tip it and mess up the screen.

any player needs to transcode dvd files...but it IS compatible with mpeg4 files. dvd quality video on a handheld device...gotta love it.

tivo...screw tivo, record with wmp and sync it accross. not to mention they include extra encoding software with a nice mpeg 2 encoder as well.

documentation? if you fail to figure out the simple operation, then return it and take your $400 back to buy a really nice helmet... also, the program supplied help file coupled with the web help support...you aren't using this thing if you don't have a comp.

as i mentioned, extended life battery is well worth the investment. and in case you have yet to see the battery, it's so damned thin. i'll be sure to remove the battery in my new vid maybe tomorrow since this is a hot topic.

converting files...you would be a seriously misguided individual to think ti was easy as renaming it. of course it takes time, but if you are semi-intelligent, you can use more than just their supplied software to convert files. and as i said, mpg's and avi's are my primary source. they work flawlessly.

any other questions about it, jsut ask me. i'll be happy to answer all questions. i'm even up for testing in certain conditions if anyone has an idea or a yearning.

not saying you were being a **edited** sammy, it's just that cnet blew in their review, some demands were unreasonable, and also it's the same review i've seen on 5 other sites including PC Magazine.

get the ipod if your more interested in listening to music than video, or get the vision if you want to watch more videos than music and pay an extra $100.

i say go with the ipod.

but what can i say? Im biased

I have the video iPod and I love it.  I still don't know how to get my own videos on it though.  All the conversion programs I've tried haven't worked.
